Here's the info on the group shot of 'Chops.Smile

First off are the twins, Ed & Fred. Sequential two digit serial numbered .357 Model 12's made in 1970, the first year of DW production. They were shipped as Pistol Pac's…and so far, have never been fired.

This one's a .357 Model W12. Just guessing, I think this one was born maybe 8~12 months after the Model 12 twins in the previous post, has a 4-digit serial number & is wearing a combat grip.
It's also the the best & deepest shine of the whole clan.Cool

Here's a .38 Special Model D11. I think this one's also a '70~'71 gun…is a service revolver, with target grips, a matte finish, fixed sights & a fixed barrel.

Image Enlarger

This one's a .38 Special Model 14. A 5-digit gun, from somewhere in the late '74 to early '75 range & sporting a flush barrel nut, which represents one of the first running design changes to the line. This one's a service revolver, with fixed sights, a slim grip & matte finish.

Here's my latest addition to the 'Chop family, a .357 Model 15 with a 6″ barrel.

This is a 4-digit gun, made shortly after the model switch from “W12″ to “Model 15″ & still retains the s/n stamped on the frame under the crane. Later, the s/n moved onto the outside of the frame. At this point in time, I would estimate this as having been manufactured in the '72~'73 era…probably closer to '72.

Image Enlarger

This one's got a unique feature that the others don't share, a smooth exposed barrel nut, with 12 flutes cut into it. The tool from the earlier guns fits, but a 5/8 box end wrench feels like it grabs more firmly.

Image Enlarger

Another feature is the roll marking on the frame. It uses four lines, as opposed to three on later models. The fourth line was there to spell out “Made In”. This is also marked on the Model 14 pictured above, but that one's a 5-digit gun & has a flush barrel nut.

How about a DW knock-off...Big Grin  A High Standard Sentinel MK III.  Slightly different in appearance from the DW.  It has an internal barrel nut like the 15, and a slightly different rear sight.  This one is about to get a trigger job.

Now we can go back a little further in time and check out the W-12 chop.  Really deep bluing, giant sights, and that beautiful exposed barrel nut....

I've said it before, and I'll say it again...IMO, Porkchops look best wearing the snubby barrel. They have that tuff "bulldog" look to them this way.Cool All the other fearures on the gun seem exaggerated in a way, with the short shroud...the big sights, the large barrel nut. Gotta love it.Laugh

When I first looked at my pistol a week ago a W12 I saw the external barrel nut and I immediately thought ugh, I spent a week researching this pistol mainly on this forum and went back yesterday and bought it, you are sooo right the looks grow on you, it gives the pistol an unusual look which I like, the pork chop design is also different, seeing how these pistols interchange so much how hard is it to change the barrel and cylinder out and make this a different caliber such as 32 H&R or am I just day dreaming?

That all depends on how good of a custom smith you can get convinced to do the job.lol2 I haven't heard of anyone doing it, but I'm not saying it's impossible either.

*EDIT* I read my post back to myself three times & it makes almost no sense...I don't care, it's my post & I'm stickin' to it! 😀 hehe

Great minds think alike--I seem to remember someone here (me) stating he wanted to make a convertible chop in 357/32 mag...laughing  Someday, when I find a cheap W-12 cylinder it will happen.Drool

Been asked to post some pics here

There you are

I still have a question will a model 14-15 porkchop fit the W12, will the 11-12 model porchops fit the w12? Would love to find a 8" barrel for the W12

If it's the 8" non-Porkchop shroud you're thinking of, I'll let you decide.Wink

I keep seeing threads such as this

http://www.thefiringline.com/forums/showthread.php?t=280846

and pics that show Model 15s not 15-2 that wear porkchop shrouds, are these people confused, there seems to be some confusion among some people on how to tell different models apart, I thought there might be a 8 inch porkchop out there, it doesn't look like it would be impossible to have a gunsmith lengthen a 6" porkchop shroud and use a 15-2 8 inch barrel, have you heard of any such thing, it would be a fun project, a person could sacrifce say a 4" or 6" barrel shroud and make a 8 inch porchop Drool

Yeah, I've seen that thread & have been tempted to go there & try to set the record straight…or as straight as I know to this date. I sort of assumed that being such an old thread, that it didn't get read very often…you've killed that theory.lol2

I have a feeling that there will always be some degree of confusion regarding Dan Wesson revolvers…and rightfully so, since there hasn't been any factual record keeping to rely on & refer to. I have a hunch that a few of the posters in that thread have learned quite a bit more since some of those thoughts were typed.

That's what this site is for…to try & be as much of an "authority" on DW's as possible. And we get a little better each day, with the collective help from members.Wink For the record (& as far as I know to this date), all three of the guns in that thread are 15-2's. The one gun is an early 15-2, with a non-interchangeable front sight. Model 15 & 15-1 were both Porkchops. Anything with the modern (non-Porkchop) shroud is a 15-2 (or 14-2)…there are even some progressive changes in them too, but they're all still a -2.

My gun in post #5 above is a Model 15.

This one below is a Model 15-1.

Image Enlarger

The features that (I believe) make this a 15-1 are…flush barrel nut, later style crane latch, mushroomed end on the ejector rod, smaller rear sight, s/n moved to the outside of the frame.

So the hundred dollar question will all porkchops interchange, and was an 8" made?

I thought I read somewhere that a 8" was available for a 15, 15-1.

From the info I have gathered as of today, I'm confident that all Porkchop barrels will interchange with each other. I've never seen or heard of an 8" Porkchop barrel...not to say that it's impossible, but from everything I've read, 6" is the longest.
