Sounds like a no-brainer and it really is. The function of the grip screw on a Dan Wesson revolver is to simply hold the grip onto the frame; nothing more, nothing less. However, when overtightened, the grip screw can be the culprit for several issues.

Over-tightening is most common when installing soft rubber grips but may also occur when installing wood or Powerwood grips. When a grip screw is over-tightened, it raises the mainspring guide too high and causes interference by placing too much pressure on the hammer assembly or otherwise affecting its full movement. The owner experiences a revolver that doesn't function properly in double action. Not coming to a fully cocked position or not staying in a fully cocked position are both indicators of a grip screw that is interfering with function. To determine if the grip screw is the culprit, remove the screw and check the function of the revolver. Correct the issue by not over-tightening, installing a shorter screw, or by using a washer or two.

The standard Dan Wesson grip screw size is either 1 ½” or 1” in length with an 8-32 thread. Since the thread is a common size, easily found at a hardware store, the Dan Wesson owner may discover they have something different than standard, such as a 1 ¼” pan head screw. Any screw that properly fits is just fine

Technically, the glass is always full; half liquid, half air....
