OK, this is a complete rookie question.  I understand things like FMJ, SFMJ, JHP.  What does wadcutter mean.  What are the other types of projectiles out there and what works best for deer hunting.  I am currently planning on using Buffalo Bore 158 gr. JHP.  I'm hoping to be a proficient shooter out to 40 yds by hunting season.  Sorry for so many questions at one time.  I'm just trying to learn as much as possible.

Personally, I'd use a 180 grain projectile on deer, most 158's are meant for shooting people.  Either the Winchester Partition or the Hornady 180 grain XTP would be an excellent choice.

Hey Reifer. I am glad someone finally asked a question I can answer. Wadcutter type bullets are square/ flat nose projectiles for shooting paper targets as they are usually really accurate and cut a clean hole in paper. Not something you would use for hunting except maybe small game. As far as bullet choice for deer hunting gos, there are an infinite number of choices and as many opiniones. Some folks like light faster bullets but most guys use the bigger and heavier the better theory. If you are hand-loading you have lots of choices, if not factory ammo is great stuff, just not as many choices. My opinione would be to get a big heavy bullet, HP or SP and spend more time practiceing because shot  placement will mean more than bullet style. ( excluding extremely light bullets or FMJs of course) Just my two cents worth.

I also recommend the 170 or 180gr for deer.  The wad cutters are great for rabbit and other small game out to 40 yds.  I've even taken a squirrel with one, but only had the hind legs and back to clean.
