Short version of a long story about how I came to have a Dan

Hello again, haven't had much time for the past month or so since I've joined. Finally made some time, here's my story, and I'm sticking to it.

Back around the turn of the century (good lord!) I took my new wife to a hunter safety course. As a result, we got into black powder; I had a T/C Hawken, and got lucky on line and found her a lefty New Englander. We shot BP for a couple of years, then I started a traveling line of work, no time to shoot. Fast forward to couple three years ago. Dug out the BP stuff, started looking around on line, developed a Contender addiction. And reloading. Wife sort of interested, but really liked BP. Bought a Combat Commander, she liked it!! Started doing gun shows. Back the beginning of the year, there was one 3 miles from the house, we went, looked around, I found some 357 REM MAX EXPERIMENTAL (that's what's on the box), but didn't see much in the way of TCs, wife didn't find anything she couldn't live without. A month later there's a big show about 40 miles away, we go, look around, see quite a bit. She finds a S&W 6906, never fired, for a deal. So I gotta find something to keep things even. I'd noticed an old Ruger Mark I earlier, went back, still there, the gentleman tells me it's the most accurate pistol he's ever shot, I figure what the heck, the price is good, so I says "Yup, I'll take it"

Still with me? It's gonna get better right now! So he says, I've got a spare magazine and a soft case for it to go with it. Enjoy.

Soft case is a genuine Dan Wesson soft case. Long dormant synapses fire, brain says 'wonder what ever became of them?' Intertubes to the rescue, next thing you know I pay too much for a pristine 15-2 in blue, 6" V. Find this forum. Find Eric. Get lucky, sneaking a browse at work, Eric has some 'not quite good enough' extra heavies, and a bunch of gotta haves. End up with incredible 6" extra heavy and parts and fiber optic front sights, etc from Eric.

You may notice a lack of shooting so far. In fact, took the Dan out twice (both sneaks from the office), what a trigger! But light strikes on 3 or 4 rounds out of 50. But what a shooter!  My T/Cs are envious because they're stuck in the dark while the Dan gets to go out.

Finally made time today. Got the CZ-82 that had been detail stripped for the past month back together, apparently ok, as snap caps function ok. (Boy, what a PITA that d**n auto-safety spring is - anybody happens to be there, I finally filed a grove in the end of a straightened out brass cotter pin and got hold of that little sucker.) So now it's 2000 on Saturday evening, the boss is still at work (did I mention we're busier at the office than a one armed paper hanger with hemroids?), and I've finally gotten the d**n CZ back together. Guess I'll get out the goodies Eric sent me, and have a look at the Dan.

Good grief!! There's not enough parts in here to make a gun work! That must be my problem with light strikes - not enough parts!

Replaced mainspring, following the 'every Joe tune up' sticky (thanks everybody!), cleaned what seemed to me to be an excess of oil out of the innards (have I mentioned that there ain't enough parts? Strip a CZ-82 - there's some parts), put her back together with a red fiber front sight sitting on top of Eric's Extra heavy 6". Going to the range tomorrow, will get pics and file a range report. So that's the rest of the story.

Finally, would like to comment on what a great community this is. The civility and general lack of knuckle dragging cretins is awesome. I hope that I get to the point where I can make some meaningful contributions. If you've actually read this far, particular thanks to Jody for sparkplugging this, to Eric for the great work he's doing, and to the entire crew for maintaining an island of sanity on the net.

Good to have another non-knuckle dragger around!  However the Cretin part doesn't quite fit me; my family is from Crete but we moved long ago, so I guess we're excretians.  Wait a minute….

BTW- I'm also a big TC fan; 17 FB, 221FB, 223, Bob, 6.5-284, 6.8 SPC, 30 GNR, 310 GNR, 44 mag, 45 Colt, and 45-70 Gov...

I think this is the first time I've heard that a DW soft case was the first step to a case of full-blown dwas It's funny how the affliction works, isn't it?lol2

Great story & well written. The Long dormant synapses fire, brain says 'wonder what ever became of them' part of the story made me laugh out loud.rofl
