I just missed a good deal on a DW44, so now I'm on the lookout for a large frame 41 or 44. I figured I'd get a full lug - just because I guess.

In a 41 or 44 with an 8" bbl, is a full lug really that much better for recoil? Where is the break point at which it's just extra weight to tote around?

When it comes to the .44,

Depends on the loads you want to shoot, mid to light with 180-240grain

bullets , a four or 6inch barrel would be just pleasent to shoot.

Want to shoot a 300 grain 1300+ fps with 1200 lbs of energy and

you'll appreciate every ounce of extra weight.

The 8" 744 with hot 300gr Noler JHP load of mine (1350 average) is like shooting a 6" S&W 686 with a light load, almost no recoil to the hand, just muzzle hop. With light loaded (850 to 900 fps) L/SWC it's about like shooting 22 revolver for recoil.

Purely my own opinion, but going from 4" to 6", the extra weight is noticeable in controlling muzzle flip, over 6" probably less so. More important is almost certainly a good grip. I hated my son's 8V with Pachmayr Presentation grip, my 6VH was just as bad with wood grips, a tremendous improvement with the Hogue rubber fingergroove grips.

I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman "Were is the Self Help Section?" She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.

My experience is 180 out from above regarding grips, I hate the poor designed Houge finger grove's but love the woods. Also like the 4" & 8" over the 6" barrel. I guess different strokes for different folks, I suffer from arthritis and find the grip angle and size of the Dan's the best if any revolver I ever owned or shot.

My 744 with range shooting grips.

I should clarify-my comment on the wood grips on a 744 referred to the DW factory large frame wood grips

I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman "Were is the Self Help Section?" She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.

Those were bought from DW, however they very well be Houge. I also like the old finger grove that came with originally, but I like the orignal big woodies better.

These old DW 44's are just the cat's meow, but the 1/2 scale are fun too. I love the big woodies on the M-22 also.

Who said no recoil? I said about like the S&W 686 (I've had 3) a very over rated gun. I have a S&W629 3" for glove box gun, and no way in hell would I shoot one of my hot 300gr loads in the gun. If the gun held together, I know my hand would not.

It has less recoil then my 1911 Colt DE's and why I don't shoot them as much. I think that DW grip angle is just about as important as the almost 7 lbs of steel.

My 629 3" Smith with 240 Corbon hurts my hand and is hard to control, but the DW VH4 with same ammo feels almost like the mild 850-900 fps 240gr L/SWC or L/RN does in the Smith.

The only reason I own the S&W is for glove box duty, and it would be easier to replace if stolen or turned over to PD if used. The DW 44 would be difficult and probably more expensive to replace, but mainly more difficult.

I've only shot the .44 mag for 25 years, not  near as many as WP, nor have I

developed any arthritis in my wrist ...as  of yet, and not generally sensitive to

hard recoil.

I have probably shoot more 44 than any other round with well over

50,000+ through the years and that is a mild estimate. 98% of that has been

factory ammo with a few homemade loads from " you better check the barrel

and see if that bullet cleared " to " Damn..I don't want no more of that "

Having dozen's of 44's go through my hands over the years and only

having 4 different models as of today and only one being a Dan that I

have been shooting over a year now I totally Agree with the old timer,

for whatever reason , design, grip, angle or "they just plane got it right"

the Dan Wesson is the softest shooting 44 out there...bar none .

All their revolvers are easy shooting, be it 22, 357 or 44, and like Blacktop not sure why. They just got it right, and that's all there is to it. All my other revolvers are gone except the 629 3" and that might be gone in near future if I need trading fodder. Well there is the two Ruger Bear Cats I have new and unfired in gun safe to use as training pistols for the two grandsons, before moving them up to automatic's and centerfire guns.

I have to ask if you would want a .44 mag, what recoil were you expecting? Thats like driving a 426 Hemi and wanting 25 miles to the gallon.cool

Simply put IF you buy a .44 Magnum you know it will have big recoil (buy something smaller if you want less). In the same logic a big block V8 Hemi will have massive power but at a cost. It is relative with a dash of irony.

My son, when twelve year old, shot factory loads weekly through his PV44H.

As I've said "The weight, contour, grip and shape of the DW make it VERY comfortable to shoot. The first day Gary fired 100 factory rounds, with no ill effects, other than euphoria! I was impressed. "

A range we went to rented firearms for the session. Nothing in the 44 class (1980s) came close to taming recoil like the DW.

"close isn't good enough"

Dan just got it right!  The 44 if wanting less run 44sp through it for range time, if you want to make your friends say damn toss a few factory 44mags down range.  I still like my 744w/10" HV for no flip at all, wouldn't want to lug it around in the field all day, but at the range it is a sweet shooter reguardless of the loads.   Same loads in Ruger black hawk about rip your hand off….

is the barrel ported on the 6 and 8"?  These seem to tame the jump some what!  cool
