I need some help from someone who knows about Dan Wesson revolvers. I came across what I am told is a model 15, .357mag. It does not have the model number stamped on it any where I can see. The serial number is 370006.  What puzzles me the most is it has a strange finish; it appears to be powder coated or painted black, instead of blued. I don’t know if this is factory or someone customized it. It looks as if it has never been fired. But the pawn shop that has this for sale knows no history on the pistol. They do not have the box or anything that would normally come with it new. They are asking $299.00. I have always wanted a nice Dan Wesson .357 But I don’t want to be ripped off. 300 bucks for a nice revolver is not bad, but on principal I want to make sure I am buying what is represented.     So I guess my questions are.  Is this a factory finish? Is 299 a good price for this pistol? And what is the pistol worth? Thanks for any help guys.

Welcome to the forum, you have definitely come to the right place for Dan Wesson info.

The gun in your pics is a model 15-2, .357 magnum. Looking at the serial # chart in the archive I would guess it was made around 1985-1986.

As for the value, hopefully some other more knowledgeable members will give their opinions. It depends some where you're located, and availability of DWs near you I guess, and whether you would want to invest money to restore the finish. My non-expert opinion is that if you want to shoot it as is and it is mechanically sound it's not a bad price, if you have thoughts of restoring the original finish you may be better off with another gun.

The finish I can safely say is not original, it would have been blued or very rarely nickel plated. Not sure what is on it now it's hard to tell by the pics. You may want to contact forum member Hotbluer, he blues revolvers and might have insight on removing what is on it and the cost of rebluing it.

I think it is a great looking gun, and the over size medallions in the grips are

harder to come by, probably original to the gun. Refinishing is always an option.

If I am incorrect, another member will chime in.

Not a factory finish, and from what I see in the photos, whatever finish it is does not look even or well applied. Dan Wesson 15-2's are renowned for a mirror bright blued finish, I don't think that is a $300 gun. If it is unfired, it's had a lot of dry firing from the look of the cylinder drag ring.

I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman "Were is the Self Help Section?" She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.

Welcome!  My question would be is what did they cover up? I bought a 14-2 (fixed sites) for 200 it had been molly coated the guy said it was pitted and he wanted to make it look better!  This one would be a shooter at most, if action is clean and smooth then make them an offer (pawn shops are into it for alot less), say in the 225 range.  I would give maybe 250 for a shooter in that shape with fine grips! Any Extra BA's (barrel assemblies)you would install will look funky unless that doesn't mater! maybe a SS one!

welcome
