Love this forum-just put money down on a 15-2 357 with 6inch bbl, Monson
This gun comes with a plain black sight, no color tab
is this just a normal variation?

Yep, those are common- a partridge sight. You'll want to visit Eric's store (EWK on the right margin) and pick up a fiber sight if you plan to shoot in low-light (hunting) conditions. Otherwise you can stick with what you have or pick up a front sight with insert. It's all about your preference.
Technically, the glass is always full; half liquid, half air....

Does the front site have a set screw on the end of the shroud under the sight or is it pinned?

The early 15-2 models had a plain sight (no plastic insert) and was pined in place. DW shortly went to the interchangeable sight with colored inserts.
