Trying to figuire out What year the DW I'm getting was made. It was made in Monson Mass and the serial # is 271491. It's blued with an 8" barrel. It's a model 15 in 357 mag. I'm new here and am kinda having a hard time navigating around (my stupidity, not the site). Scrolling around the serial numbers that I've seen, I'm guessing it's a 1979, but I'm not sure. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanx!

Welcome!

Can't say the exact year,, but it pre-dates my 1986, by 10000. Really, though knowing the model and plant location, tells yo most of what you need to know

Soap Box, Ballot Box, Ammo Box

in that order.

4 Monson Model 15's

1 Palmer FB 15

1 Rossi 357 Model 92 (lever)

1 CZ 75B

welcometo the DWF. Looks like your 15-2 was produced between 79 and 81. Hard to nail it down much closer than that.

Thanks guys! I think I'm going to like it here with such a helpful group of people here! I'm going to try and post a pic as soon as I can get it in my pc. I'm buying this from a good buddy of mine. He has 2, the other is a stainless version that he's keeping. He bought both of them used years ago and has never fired either one of them. They went into his collection and have been for years. The one I'm getting actually wasn't for sale, but since I had an interest in buying a revolver, he made me an offer I couldn't refuse on what he felt was the best revolver ever made. He guarantee's me it's in near mint condition and I'd be hard pressed to tell it's not new by the condition it's in. While it may take me afew years, i'm going to try and get a complete set of barrels (2.5, 4, and 6") and maybe even the pistol pack case for it. My main usage will be for target shooting, but I've always wanted to deer hunt with a pistol and this one would be perfect. i'd like to mount a scope, but don't want to tap the frame or the original shroud so I'm going to be looking for a used 8" matching shroud in any condition (since I don't want to ruin the original) to mount the Weaver rail onto. I'm really pumped up and can't wait to get it.

Out of curiosity, what can I expect to pay for just an 8" shroud?

On a auction site such as gun Broker a 8 inch barrel assembly will be $150.00 ish. From DW a new VH8 BA is listed for $374.00 and the shroud only for $261.00.  If you are patient, EWK produces them aftermarket a little more affordable, but he is currently out of stock.

First, let me say welcome to the DWF.

Second, there are scope mounts available that do not need to drill the shroud for attachment.  There must be a bad spot on my hard drive because I can't think of the names right now.  Someone else will fill you in on that.  They are frequently available on both Gunbroker and eBay,

Third, so you want to build a PistolPack.  Many of us have embarked on this quest.  The problem is it fosters a disease called DWAS.  Very expensive to treat and it never seems to go away.

Hope you enjoy your new gun.

Scope mounts:

BSquare has one that is pretty big and clunky, usually sells for about $50 when you can find one

Burris made one, out of production and hard to find, you'll pay $100 plus if you find one

Some rings will direct mount to a Vent Rib shroud, Leupold I think, also pretty rare.

I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman "Were is the Self Help Section?" She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.
