I was given via "pay it forward" a Dan Wesson Target grip. This is the first and only DW grip I have with "DWA" on it.

  1. Its by far the largest grip I have ( I like that)
  2. The hole in the butt of the grip is too small for the hex headscrew to fit
  3. The hole in the butt of the grip is too small for even the threads to fit
  4. The cut out for the frame is slightly over sized.

This make me sad. So is this a large frame grip?

The large frame grip would be REALLY sloppy... I have a few DW grips that you need to thread the screw through the wood.

Pine,

Sorry to hear about the fit. I could check some of the others I have for fit. I didn't try it out but am sure it is for a small frame. PM me to work it out.

A few observations on grip fit.

DWA era grips tend to run a little fatter than DW era grips, can't prove it but that seems to be the norm.

A large frame grip normally will have a round hole for the grip stud, where a small frame will have a square hole. I doubt they will interchange without serious modification.

I believe the grips were all built by sub contractors and there are many variations over the history which effects things like screw holes and fit and such.

There have been several subtle changes in grip screws also.

DW models vary in dimensions also.

And lastly wood is not static it moves (shrinks and expands) with climate, humidity, age and the like.

I have had issues with fitting a grip perfectly to only a few days later and or a climate change it no longer fits the gun. As a result I started leaving a little room to allow the grip to  (shrink/grow). I have had several factory grips that fit quite loose, its just the way it is.

I realise none of this solves your problem but maybe helps explain a little of it, and of course I am no authority, just a guy who likes guns and grips and things.DWF Sign

Thanks All!

Umm Jag… I didn't get this grip from you unless you live in MS??? I don't think it will prove too tough for me to use a few drill bits and ream each of the holes out. I really want to try this grip out. Plus … its just a nice big ole fat grip. Something an arthirtic hand would approve.

Hey LB, have you started on my grip yet?

Come tomorrow morning ( 7am) a group of gun lovers is getting together to chew the fat at the local Shoenys.. be my first time to meet these folks… very much looking forward to it. being its MS… I doubt the waitress will bat an eye at a bunch of old guys talking about guns. (gonna be showing off the Lady Dan…)

in that order.

Ihave had  to "ease", or open up, the hole in most of my DW and Hogue grips to fit the grip screw, especially the ones with a captured washer. Done carefully, so as not to deepen the hole for the screw head, this is neither uncommon, nor should it be a problem.

As LB noted, there is a fair amount of variation in fit throughout the range of DW grips, no matter the vendor. The one piece grip makes that more challenging, with a two piece grip you can simply sand the flats to tighten the fit.

I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman "Were is the Self Help Section?" She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.

To add to Steve's post, there have been a couple grips I've had to "adjust" to fit my guns too. I do believe that 20 (something) years ago, they left the factory fitting the usual DW just fine, but over time wood can change in varying climates & that's what you're experiencing with yours.

Ya know...I'm glad I live in a mostly dry "semi-desert" climate.Big Grin
