I am having extreme difficulty getting the barrel of my model 15.  I just wanted to make sure there isn't something as a Model 15-2 with a fixed barrel?

Yes they made a fixed 15-2 in the Palmer era. If it's a removable the end shoud look

like this.

That's what mine looks like. Just checking, thanks!

Does anyone know of gunsmith in Texas, preferably Lubbock or D/FW area, that's good with DWs?

soak it in solvents someone may have locktighted it.  I have a old DW wrench that will fit a socket works well for these stuborn ones.  Get us a pic of what you are dealing with .   Not sure on the Texas smith if you were near kansas we could break it loose i am sure.

Blacktop Nice pic!

EWK's wrench design is better, in my opinion. You can put an even pressure on both the left and right side while pushing in & unscrewing. The steel is very strong & doesn't slip out of the nut grooves, due to the pilot insert that slips into the barrel.

Check them out at the EWK Arms link to the right of this screen.Wink Standard EWK wrenches are sold in blue steel, stainless is pictured here.

Wonder if Eric would consider making a nut wrench like what DWA posted but

with more of a nut end. I think it would work perfect with a impact gun. I think

it would do a better job on theses really locked on nuts. Was not

long ago someone used the all thread double nut method and bent his frame,

If I remember right he had no other choice because the nut slots were stripped

....still I think the quick burst of an impact would help the problem before

the nut gets stipped.

3/8" impact may work well or break over.

Just a thought guys, yes an impact wrench is great for breaking loose stuck nuts but I would be hesitant to put one on my shooter for fear if the wrench did slip it would do a lot of damage before you could get it stopped. Maybe a impact driver where you only get the one impact at a time. Just my thoughts, and of course it is up to the individual to decide how to proceed. Good luck.

I've gotta agree here. I would be pretty leery of using an impact gun on one...it would only take a second to zing the notches right off a stuck nut.Surprised Cry

Using an impact driver would be more well suited for a problem like that, because you're driving the tool into the notches & twisting at the same time. It would be much harder to round off the notches in the nut using this method.

I would think an old fashioned MANUAL impact would work fine. Anyone remember the ones you actually hit with a hammer?

I think I have one of those i used on my VW bug years ago.  Agree on the manual impact if all else fails (wrenches not impact).    I have able to break all loosef with old style. wrench.

I use a hand impact on the case screws on motorcycles--keeps the Phillips from stripping out.  I've never had a need to use any impact method on any DW--and I've had more than a few Laugh...  Patience is the key, along with lots of soaking and a good solid grip on a good EWK wrench.

To do it properly you MUST put the shroud in a padded vise to eliminate any movement.

Yea this is what I was referring to. I may have called it by the wrong name. Luckily for me I have never needed one yet.

I am with Shoot on this!  I have  backed the barrels out before with nut stuck on it!  just soaked it away  some light taping to lossen things up.  The hand impact could do more harm than good on these!!!

Well.. I think the trick... besides the good soaking and a good wrench ( EWK) is the table vise.

......and maybe some heat.

Soap Box, Ballot Box, Ammo Box

in that order.

I'm not saying this won't work, but I'd be careful. Waaay back when my DW was new I had this wrench, and I rounded out the notches in the nut. I did not maintain VERY firm pressure to keep the hex headed piece in the nut, it slipped badly, and everything went downhill from there. It was sent back to DW and fixed.

I only trust the EWK wrenches now for anything that might be overtightened, they are very easy to keep even, straight into the nut pressure.

Soak it, warm it, soak it, hold the wrench in place. Give the wrench a couple of sharp taps on the end (into the bore axis) and back out the nut. It's had (maybe) 30 years to get locked into place, you might just have to work on it a little to get it out.

I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman "Were is the Self Help Section?" She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.
