Hi guys. This place is awesome, glad I found it. I have a problem I hope you guys can help with. Whenever I shoot .357 out of my model 15 I get a face full of sparks, no issues with .38+p's. I have checked the timing with the light down the barrel method and everything looks fine. I have since bought a new barrel and shroud and I am going to try it next weekend, not sure if that will help anything though. I am also going to order one of the EWK kits this week. If these things don't fix the problem, what could be causing it? Thanks for any help you guys can provide.

Welcome to DWF!

Please give some more information on your problem-are you actually seeing sparks, or do you mean that you have lead spitting? Is it factory ammo, commercial reloads, your reloads? Did you try more than one brand of .357? What style of bullet is causing the problem? What is your barrel gap set at (and checked accurately on all six chambers)? Is there any damage to the forcing cone area of your barrel?

I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman "Were is the Self Help Section?" She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.

It may be lead spitting, but I recall seeing what looks like faint sparks, but to be honest i always instinctually closed my eyes when it happens, and it does burn. I don't shoot reloads, all of the .357 ammo has been UMC, both jacketed and hollow points, no uncoated lead bullets, and the result was the same. It didn't cross my mind to try other brands, but I definitely will. I have been using the original factory gauge, and there is some moderate wear on the old barrel, it had seen a lot of use by it's previous owner which is one of the reasons I purchased a new one from CZ. I just checked the gap at all of the cylinders with my new 4" barrel and it matches up fine, but truthfully I never habitually checked the gap at all of the cylinders with the old 6" barrel assembly. I probably should have waited to post this thread until after I tried the new barrel.Embarassed I appreciate your help.

Since your gun seems to have has a lot of miles ( Big Grin ) from it's previous owner, the cylinder may be a bit loose. With the gun empty, cock the hammer back, hold your thumb on the hammer & pull the trigger, let the hammer come back to rest while still holding the trigger. Now check for back & forth cylinder rotation with your other hand. If it moves a lot (like 1/16") or so, then it may need to have a new cylinder bolt (the finger that holds the cylinder from rotating) installed & re-timed.

Or you could just stick to 38's.rofl

Good info above and I may add, if it was ours we'd recut the forcing cone if its badly worn, true it up and give it the proper taper, and then check that it does "lock up" the bolt ( cyl stop) engages and locks the cylinder, BEFORE the hammer comes alll the way back,,,,,the "hand" ( pawl) may need to be replaced as well as the 'stop' but the stop usually is not the culprit, also make sure the upper cane leg (what the cylinder rides on) has NOT been "sprung" or bent, the early DWA 14's and 15s this upper cane leg was only "pressed" in and can come loose....that was one of the early issues, when the gas ring actually "rode" on the rear, inside of the frame , and with time and wear, could actually cut a 'rut' into the frame, and cause the guns to lose their head space....this was improved upon later on , the gas seals moved OFF the cylinder, and became a shoulder on the crane leg...we used to have to "update.modify " the early guns to alleviate this...if I recall  (and its been a WHILE..) this was well up into the 190,000 plus serial number range??? and was ONLY on the early Monson guns,so if you have later one, NOT an issue...............gotta remember we worked on the guns back in the mid 70's and early 80s...then I went on to 'other' stuff, more High Standards, and Rugers...High Standard went out around 1986, so that ended that...............

dant,  did the Sentinel MK 11 and 111 have the crane problem?  Would it be something a person worry about?  I have many ole Dans and HS.   You all are the best the info compiled here is nowhere else to be found!

G&G  I hope you get it worked out!

I don't recall the "crane being a problem"  except for the design change from that ugly dog leg shroud to the "C" clip in the inner ,front of the cylinder frame (under the sideplate) of the newer style,,,,unless the "C" got 'worn' or distorted maybe ………….

when I refer to the "upper crane leg" thats the center, the cylinder rides on, and is pressed into the "crane" ( the front is flaired)…………

here is the "old style"……      and below , an early update we did years ago, removed the gas ring from the front of the cylinder, so as to NOT gouge (dig) into the frame, causing a loss of the guns 'headspace'
