I have a Model 715 6" VH, and when I received it there was a Triple-K Model 196-1 6" holster included.  This is really a S&W L frame holster, and although it fits the revolver OK, the thumb break strap doesn't fit properly over the hammer spur.  What results is a funky right angle strap path between the hammer spur and the rear sight.  As a result, the thumb break doesn't...break.  At least not very reliably.  Great for retention, not so great for USPSA shooting.

I also have a S&W Model 19 4" that I have a Safariland Model 29 holster for.  I'm looking for a similar style of thumb break leather holster for the Dan Wesson.

What are you using for a holster, and are there any recommendations you'd make?

John

Check out Simply Rugged holsters. I have one of their Sourdough holsters for my 715. It holds the gun close to the body and retains it well. It does not have a thumbbrake but you really don't need it because the fit is so good. He may be able to add one to it if you ask him when you order it. I highly recommend this company's holsters!

Thanks for the lead.  I like their Dollar Pancake for my S&W Model 60 snubbie, I just might pick one up!

But I was looking for more of a duty style rig for the Dan Wesson 6", so I guess I'll keep searching.

Here is the best $20 I ever spent on a gun, custom holster that a customer refused.

He's a guy that been doing it just for local people in the area, I can't remember the name off hand. It all hand stitched and individual carved or whatever its called. I can find out for you if you like, but the nearest gunshop I know of that sells his stuff is about 65 to 70 miles from here. I'll be about 15 or 20 from that shop tomorrow if you are really interested getting in touch with the guy. I did have the shops phone # and if I find I can post it here.

I got a Bucheimer that I picked up at the show for $10. Works good

but not a thumb break. Anything that fits a Colt python 6 in should

work for a DW 15. Better yet some water, stretching and persistence

should get that one you have to work.

I used a Bianchi #5BH when I used to carry my 715 on duty.  It worked well for me.

That looks like quite a lot of stretching!

Wow.  Just wow.  I've looked at the Sarfariland and Bianchi web sites a dozen times, but there it is at the bottom of the #5BH page.  715 6" under the make "Wesson."

My only concern is I see that the same size – 07 of the 5BH holster is listed as also fitting the S&W K, and that's the problem with my current Triple-K holster.  It's for a S&K K and sure, it fits the 715, but the 715's hammer is so much longer than my Model 19 S&W K frame that the thumb snap doesn''t fit.

Do you recall if the 5BH's thumbsnap is adjustable?

Fantastic, and thanks a million, Beaudog!

I have a Shadow II (black) for my 1911 that I would sell $40 shipped, hasn't been carried. I don't like the fact it will not allow a cocked and locked carry and never used it.

Currently using a model of theirs that I don't see on their site, it's the basic belt slide that just covers trigger area but has an elastic loop that goes over hammer with a leather tab for easy on/off.

F-111 John,  Just to be sure, I confirmed that my Bianchi #5BH has a non-adjustable thumb snap.  Sorry for the crappy pix.

Shoot and Blacktop,

Well, I feel stupid.  And the only reason I'm owning up to being stupid is that perhaps someone else can learn from my stupidness.

After looking at Shoot's 715 in his Bianchi, I noticed that judging by the rear sight, his pistol was sitting deeper in the holster than my 715 in my Triple-K in the first photo.

I've put my S&W K frame (4" bbl) in the Triple-K holster as a test, and every time it fit right in and the thumbsnap snapped normally over the back of the hammer.  I also noticed that the back sight sat deeper in the holster as well.

So I put the 715 back in again, and it slid in and stopped at it's usual spot, with the thumbstrap unable to fit around the hammer.  Then I shoved, real hard.

Guess what?  The pistol went in another 3/8", the rear sight was down against the holster, and the thumb snap now makes it around the hammer normally!

This is an old rig, passed down from my Dad when he passed away last May.  The leather must have taken a set with the pistol not being fully seated and dried out that way.  I worked in some Ballistol both on the inside and outside of the holster, inserted and removed the pistol several times, let the pistol sit in the holster for a few days, and repeated the Ballistol treatment.

Now the leather is more pliable, and the weapon goes fully into the holster every time.

Live and learn.

My guess is that the cylinder release latch was probably the area that needed to be "fitted" to the holster.

I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman "Were is the Self Help Section?" She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.
