So, I took the 738P out to the range today, allong with a new Remington Model Five.  Shooting the Rem reminded me why I hate bead front sights.

More to the point, the DW is hitting about 7" high at 10 yards, which is a bit more than I would like. (with 158 SWC and 148 DEWC loads) .  135 Grain Gold Dots strike high as well.

Any ideas?  Unfortunately the 738P has a fixed front sight, so I can't swap it for a taller sight like I could on a regular model.

7" high at 10 yards, huh? Easiest fix would be to move back 60 yards & it may be right on the bullseye.lol2

I would check POI at least at 20 and 25yds before any changes; a good smith can remove and add a taller front sight; if it's really necessary, even on a fixed sight gun.

I agree with Robhof, I would try at a little further distance just to see what happens...  Let me know how it goes.

Interesting.  My Lil' Dan prints about 2 inches high and about 3 inches left at short ranges.  This is in the hands of several people.  Can't wait to get to an outdoor range this summer so I can shoot some greater distances.  Unfortunately the closest outdoor range is over 40 miles away.

Well, it's about dead on at 100 yards.  I'll try something lighter/faster, that should bring it down a little bit.

On a related note, I had two light primer strikes firing double action (WSP primers) so I am thinking it may need a new hammer return spring.  Anyone know if it by chance uses the same spring as a model 15?

This may be more than you are willing to do if even possible but will a model 15 shroud fit the Lil'Dan. If it does you could then change front sights. Just something that popped in my head. Let us know if its possible.

The shroud on the 738p (Lil Dan) is not interchangeable with the model 15.  And I'm sure that parts for this one probably aren't available since this model was only offered for such a short time.  Might be worth checking with Genny at DW about it though.

I wanted to add to this discussion that my (new to me) Lil' Dan also shoots high & to the left. At 15 yards, I can get it on paper with POA, but anything further than that, it's off the paper.

Next time I take it out, I think I'll try placing tape on the front sight at varying heights, to see how much taller it needs to be.

BTW, it's a fun little gun.Cool

This is beginning to sound like a "feature" as opposed to a "bug".  My Lil' Dan also shoots high and left.

I love it anyway.

The solution is simple...aim about 7" low. Laugh

In a gun sighted in at a specific range, lower velocity loads generally will shoot higher, while higher velocity loads tend to shoot lower. Bullet speed is the issue...the slower bullet will remain inside the barrel longer, while the gun is recoiling upwards, thus it is launched later while the muzzle is in a higher position.

A high-velocity bullet exits the muzzle faster, while the barrel is at a lower position during recoil. Same thing applies to heavy versus light bullets. The heavy ones should strike higher on target, due to their slower exit speed and quicker recoil impulse. I had a .44 Magnum that ran out of elevation at 200 meters, shooting near max 240 grain loads. Had to hold right over the target. Switching to 300 grain loads, I was able to sight-in dead on at 200.

I'm guessing that 738P was designed for 158 grain +P loads. Try some.

I bet you're right, makes sense. I was shooting standard 38's (forget the grain) that day. I'll have to feed it +P's & see how it does.

Thanks IHMSA, I knew hotter loads usually shot lower but I didn't know why until now.Smile

You're welcome. There are other factors also, as in WHO is shooting the gun, how tightly they hold it...some folks put such a death-grip on the gun, it hardly moves at the shot.

That is the first thing I try if I have sight problems...different loads.
