Vahunter,

The blueing used does turn purple I read on here somewhere that sunlight has something to do with it.  I have a couple that have gone very deep purple and dont see the sun much.   I am sure others will have the answer here.  it does not affect the DW just changes over time!

Pictures would help  Is the side plate still blue?

This occurs with some guns, not just DW revolvers. We call this a "barney gun" and it is caused by a reaction over time between the compostition of the steel and the chemicals used in the high polish bluing. There are differing opinions on whether this can be reversed through re-bluing or not. There is no structural or functional issue with this, and many of our members find this to be attractive, unique, and desireable.

I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman "Were is the Self Help Section?" She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.

Maybe we should have a barney comparison/contest someday Laugh…  I don't have any real bad ones anymore–I did have one that was literally purple.

I just bought this one this afternoon on GB, and I think it has a little Barney going on...

DW frames are investment cast (lost-wax process) and are prone to developing the purple hue depending on the compositon of the alloy.  I have read that it is the silicon in the alloy that causes the bluing to turn over time.  I believe some get it and some don't depending on the silicon content.  The side plates and shrouds don't get it becasue they are machined from stock while the frames are investment cast.  When you see it on other guns as well it is a good indicator that the part is an investment casting. You can reblue the gun, however, the composition of the alloy will not change so there is a good probability that it will turn Barney again over time.

I see all kinds of stuff that has the purple look, scope rings, barrel ring on Remington

870's , Ruger sights....ect Might be something to do with hard metal.

Even my United Sporting Arms .41 Mag has a touch of Barney in it, so we can include them in the ranks of the "purple pistols"

A lot of HK P7 series pistols turn purple and the slides are machined not cast.  The rumor I heard was that that it had something to do with the temperature of the blueing salts.
