Attached is a picture of a 44 Mag where the frame bluing has plumbed. Is this something that happens frequently and can I / should I have it reblued?

It is somewhat common, and not just on Dan Wessons. Has to do with the different metallurgy on the parts, over time, some may turn to that "purplish" color, referred to here as a "Barney" gun, like the kids dinosaur. I think it adds character, so I don't mind it on some guns, but it can be reblued and restored to the original condition.

One of our members, hotbluer, was the Factory bluer for Dan Wesson, and is still in the business. Go here

https://www.danwessonforum.com/?page_id=3/parts-and-service/hot-bluing-service

for more info, but PM him for clarification. I think he has told us somewhere here that  although a "Barneyed" frame can be reblued, the change in color/shade over time is a function of the steel the frame is constructed from, and may/will eventually revert to the plum color

I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman "Were is the Self Help Section?" She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.

Thanks for the info.  BTW, I saw a frame on GB that was a plumb color only on one side of the frame.Surprised  Now what's that about?  Here's a link to the listing:

I'll post PICs of my "collection" when I get my Model 15-2 back from Norwich. I got a couple of additional items to show off.

That is a gun that's been exposed to the sun on one side for a long time.  The Barny effect is due to the blueing reaction to the metal and sun exposure.  That is why you'll see an occasional safe queen from the Monson era, that's as blue as a brand new gun.

Actually, if you look at the pics closely, you can see the entire frame is purple...on both sides. The part that's still blued is the removeable side plate.

One of our members "Hot Bluer" used to work at one of the DW plants & knows all about the Barney problem. He said that IHMSA & Steve said...that it's something to do with the metallurgy in the frame parts that makes the bluing turn purple. Read here; https://www.danwessonforum.com/?page_id=3/revolvers/two-tone-dw44&value=sf%25members%251%25user620&search=1&ret=all

I think sunlight plays some part in that, but I know od some safe queens that also start turning purple...like my SuperMag's is a safe queen & the trigger guard is turning slightly purple.

In that thread, Hot Bluer said that it's only guns from a certain era that have the most problems, and that theory seems to fit. My '78 .357 for example, has no sign of any Barney colors at all...just some bumps & bruises from being used a lot.Smile

I've got an old Ruger single six that's Barnied as bad as my supermag was.  The DW is getting an overhaul at CZ and getting blued along with the work.  I decided to get it done at one time, otherwise I would have used our website guy, but the expense of 2 mailings outweighed any savings.
