Maybe I have just missed the fact that 4 inch 44 mag Barrel Assemblies were originally ported? I just came into possession of the 4 inch BA below, with a ported shroud and barrel. I only thought the porting was only on 6 inch and 8 inch BAs (and maybe longer).

and the rollmark...

Are these common?  I think I may keep this one (but use my un-ported barrel)...

Based on the articles I read most of the shrouds had the ports and you could get either ported or non-ported barrels.  I personally do not like the ported barrels and was fortunate to come across a non-ported 4" for my 744.

Ahh, my mistake. I like the un-ported BAs also, but I'd like the Monson Roll Mark to go along with the Monson frame I have.  So I will have to buy an un-ported barrel if am going to sell my etched un-ported shroud. Probably not a good idea to put a ported barrel in an un-ported shroud.

For my 744, except for the 10 inch shroud, all shrouds (4, 6, and 8 inch) are ported and I have both ported (which I don't shoot anymore) and non-ported barrels for each size.

This is a Monson made gun. I'm not sure whether Palmer made guns continued with this format and I'm pretty certain that Norwich guns were not ported.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

Until just recently, I was convinced that the ported shrouds were only available in 4, 6 & 8" configurations. I had never seen a 10" factory ported shroud.

Until I came across this auction pic last month...

I wish I was the high bidder, so I could see it up close & personal today.laugh There was no mention of a ported barrel inside that shroud.

I have both 6 inch ported and unported barrels and a ported shroud in .44 Mag that I use on my 7445.  Just don't make the mistake of firing unjacketed bullets out of the ported barrels.  Lead builds up under the shroud and makes it almost impossible to remove the shroud.  My gunsmith friend learned a whole new vocabulary before he got mine apart embarassed and made me promise to shoot no more lead bullets through the ported barrel.

Take care and keep your powder dry!

I have a 744 with a 4 inch ported barrel and shroud.  I do shoot it but only with jacketed bullets and I frequently remove the shroud and clean the inside.

Fun removing those stuck shrouds!  broken-computer,  I will check mine when I get some time!   I think most are ported up to 8"  my 10 is not!   poke

I also now have in my possession a 10 inch ported shroud. It came with an un-ported barrel. I would assume they must have made a 10 inch ported barrel at some point, else it wouldn't make much sense to port the shroud...

I assume the same thing. One of these days, I expect someone will pop in here with a ported 10" barrel.

I would normally agree, except:

1) Very possible shrouds were ported "just in case" ported barrels were ever produced

2) We know so little about DW's that every time we think we know something to be correct, something pops out of the woodwork to prove us wrong.

At any rate, .44 barrels are coming from EWK soon, you could certainly get a ported one made

I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman "Were is the Self Help Section?" She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.
