Does anyone know when it is manufactured ?

Is it a model 40 ?

The serial is: E003242
it is manufactured in Monson, mass.

What is the best way to mount a scope without drilling and tapping ?

Yes, that's a Model 40. Looks like a good one!Laugh

Your s/n is a little lower than mine, I would estimate it's manufacture date mid to late 1983. Unfortunately at this time, there's no way to nail it down to an exact date, so we have to guess from the info we've gathered.

Some of these other guys will be along shortly to tell you about the best scope mounts.Smile

I put a B-Square on mine in 1992 and it's been on and holding since.  I bought a spare shroud for mine so I could mount it on one shroud and use the other if I wanted the iron sights.  They are most accurate with 180 to 200gr bullets, and don't use anything lighter than 158gr as the hyper speed of light bullets will damage the forcing cone and hasten flame cutting of the top strap; the reason Ruger discontinued their 357max's, but many of the Rugers are still around and even in competitions, due to being fed propper rounds.  That's also the reason DW sent out a spare barrel with their guns.

I would like to have quick detach rings, i have heard that it is possible to use the top rail on the barrel shroud as a mounting base.

Welcomethere are many options to mt on the vented rib one is the leupold mts. # 50077, the bad thing about leupold is that they no longer make that mt. so you will have to hunt to find a set. I found a new set years ago but haven't seen any since, the other manufacture may be your quickest option. what ever you do keep in touch and enjoy, againWelcomePost Pics

The B-square mount is the way to go, it simply clamps to the vent rib with no modification, I have one on a .44 and it has not shaken loose.

I just got a B Square, it was advertised for a .44, but I think there is really only one size, correct?

I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman "Were is the Self Help Section?" She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.

I have several and I believe there is only one size fits all.  They were a great idea that actually worked.  I have fired quiote a few powerful 44's out of the gun that currently has one on it and it does not change.
