I could be wrong but I think cutting the spring will actually stiffen the pull, not lighten it.

I'd try cleaning it well and some light polishing of the internal such as Shoot did https://www.danwessonforum.com/forum/reloading/tuning-up-your-15-2-the-average-joe-method

Just my 2 cents...

Cutting coils does work -- at times.  If is an iffy situation and no two springs/guns are the same.  Depending on how much tension your spring has determines how much you can snip off.

While clipping coils does lighten trigger pull to an extent, it also lightens hammer strikes, which will result in misfires.

Best best is to do a thorough cleaning/polishing and install a new lighter spring.  Although the newer spring is lighter in weight, it is the proper full length compared to a clipped spring.

Techinically speaking you can't cut the Trigger spring as it is a wire spring not a coil spring. You can cut the mainspring but lighter strikes will occur, trying to fire in DA will be less reliable. Clean and polish the internals and I think you'll be surprised, also try a light grease like white lithium on hammer and trigger.

Thanks! The reason I asked is my Dad is a S&W smith and we started talking about it the other day.
