Hello

I have found a Dan wesson model W12 (short barrell)at my local pawn shop. After researching this site the way I understand it is the model 12 had the porkchop shroud with the external nut.Well this one has the straight shroud with the internal nut.It looks like it has a silver colored  spacer between the shroud and the frame, maybe to accept the later style shroud.Has anyone ever seen this,or am I confused? The serial # is 3229 if that helps. No extra barrells ,gun feels nice and tight, smooth trigger-action.He is asking 329.00

Thanks

Don

I agree with LB, it sounds like someone has made a conversion piece for it. The crane is originally held into the frame by the lower "leg" on the barrel shroud, so that is probably what the function of the silver piece is.

Sounds like a cool find, we'd sure love to see pics of this when you bring it home.DWF Sign

That is just plain cool!Laugh

I see the back end of the shroud has been milled off, to compensate for the thickness of the adapter. I wonder if this is just a one-off creation, or if they were mass produced for a while? Judging from the fact that the shroud has been milled, I would suspect that if there is more than just this one, there's probably no more than a small handfull.

One thing though...I'm sorta surprised to see a snubby barrel on it. You'd think that the main reason to make an adapter is so that a guy could now use an 8" or longer barrel.

That's a really cool find, thanks for sharing the pics.occasion

That is cool. I wonder if one could be made strong enough but thin enough to get away without altering the shroud.  Just a thought, and maybe a project for you chop heads. Laugh

So,do you guys think this is factory? The spacer looks factory to me.If it's not than somebody did a darn good job. Also you would have to pull that locating pin on the back of the shroud to mill it.The pawn shop owner told me that the lady that pawned it also had extra barrells for it but did not pawn them with the gun.He said legally he can't give me her name but would ask about them if he sees her again(he said he knew her).

There we go, that makes sense. I bet there's at least an eight incher in that stash & maybe longer...all the way up to 15"?Laugh
As far as it being factory, I really doubt it, here's why. The first year (or so) of the 15-2 shrouds (the non-Porkchop style) had pinned front sights. If your shroud had a pinned front sight, then I may entertain the thought of it being a factory prototype of some sort. However, with it being the later interchangeable style, I lean more towards it being someone's one-off creation.

There are some darn good machinists out there that can make some really nice peices...we even have one here on this forum,"EWK_Stuff", who has sucessfully made his own shrouds.Wink The owner of "Single Actions.com" can whip out a revolver cylinder from a hunk of solid stainless, without breaking a sweat.Worship Big Grin

So no, I think yours was the creation of a darn good machinist out there somewhere, maybe it was even that lady's husband. What she doesn't know is, that because the back of those shrouds has been milled off, they can only be mounted on your gun. If she sells them elsewhere & someone tries to mount them onto a regular 15-2, the barrel will stick out that extra 3/16" (or whatever the thickness of that adapter is) and the ejector rod will probably smack the end of the factory cutout, not allowing the cylinder to close.

Those barrels are built for your gun and none other.
