From your description, it is a model 714.  The remaining part of the model designation would depend on the barrel shroud version.  If the standard shroud, the full model would be a 714V4.  With a heavy shroud, the model is 714VH4.

I agree, sounds like a 714. Here's a shot of a rear sight you're describing from a 14 (blued version).

Although, as far as I know, the 14 & 714 models only had one shroud style. The top rib is ½ as tall as the 15 & 715 shrouds, so no vents are optional on these. Various DW shroud types can be seen HERE.

You would have to get a gunsmith to machine the frame & fit an adjustable rear sight to it. You can mount 15-2 barrel assemblies on the 14, but if you stay with the fixed rear sight, you would need to get a short front sight from EWK Arms (the link to the right of this screen)-->

15-2 BA's can be easily found on Gunbroker.

Vented, slotted, heavy shroud for a small frame would be a very custom item. Basically you would need a VH shroud, get the slots machined, and install the EWK Conversion front sight.

I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman "Were is the Self Help Section?" She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.
