I finally had the day that had been awaited for about 2-1/2 months.  A day at the range.  Had the place to myself for the most part.  I took along the 45VH6-colt that was just purchased from a fellow DWF member, the 414SM and 744VH10.  The 45 started the day off.  All I had loaded for this caliber was some rather tame loads used to shoot in my father's lever action.  I dialed it in at 50-yards and was able to get a 5" group out of it with the mild loads and 6" barrell.  Considering the loads and my ability, I was pleased.  The gun performed flawlessly and was a real pleasure.

Next came the 744,  I had about 3- different loads with and wanted to dial in the gun without the scope first and had success at that rather quickly.  I had just bought this gun earlier in the winter and my son wants to use it with the scope when hunting this year.  It came with a 6" and 8" assemblies as well and each of them have power control barrels.  With the scope attached at 50-yards shooting 200 grain JHP's backed up with H-110 yielded the best result of a nice 2" group.  So far so good.

Last out was the 414 with the new 10" barrell.  I started out with 210 grain loads with two different charges of AA-1680.  They quickly yielded nice 3" groups, and by this time I am getting a touch fatigued from the heat and 50-rounds of 44-magnum ahead of this gun.  Next in was some 170-grainers I decided to try.  No experience with them in the 414 prior to this.  I had loaded them with H-110 and they were obviously a touch too hot as it pasted all 5-cases to the cylinder, had to take it home and tap them out with a punch.

Next trip out will be breaking in the 6" 414 barrell, this set is not going to be one of those safe queens

Overall great day with the Dan's

Cleaned up and ready to go with the 6" barrell below:

Great report SMF - sounds like a splendid day at the range and thanks for the excellent detail.

Your line up looks great, but that 414 "no flutes" is a heartbreaker...

Wisdom is merely the realization of how little one knows, therefore I am wise.

SMF- Glad to hear you were able to get out for a session and that it went well.

That H110 is some fickle powder, isn't it? Not much room between shoots great and "where's my punch".

Nice range report. That trio is excellent, especially the .414. Makes me wish I had made time to shoot my Dan Wessons this weekend, but I just got too busy with other stuff at the range. Of course, leaving a box of ammo at home didn't help.

Boy, those must have been some hot loads, to stick the cases in the cylinder.lol2 Sounds like a great day at the range, I wish I would have been able to get out & go plinkin...I have about a dozen more water jugs & assorted stuff ready for the next outing.Laugh

BTW, on the shooting "stuff" thought, in case you guys haven't tried it yet, a can of fix-a-flat is really fun to shoot!Cool
