I recently bought a 4" barrel assembly for my 15-2 and have come to discover that the nut is stuck on the barrel currently on the gun.  I have read to try soaking and heat on it, but am having trouble removing the front sight.  I have removed the screw on the front of the sight but can't seem to get it to lift out.

The nut just takes some time soaking, trying, soaking...  The front sight is easier--use a piece of heavy rubber on both sides of the sight and a pair of vise-grips--they pop right out.

I got the front sight out, but what is the best way to go about soaking it?  Also, what is the best thing to soak it in?

Drop it into a bowl with a 50/50 solution of ATF and acetone.

Do you have the old style wrench that would fit in a socket. I have gotten them off with this before and a leather wrapped vice.

First of all, take a deep breath. This barrel has had 30 (+???) years to get stuck in place! All of the possible solutions noted here may contribute to your solution, and you may need several solutions.

After the soaking (maybe for several days) and some heating, try placing a good barrel wrench (EWK, duh!) in place, secure the shroud carefully protected in a vise, give the barrel nut a couple of sharp taps, and (holding the barrel wrench very firmly in place) try cranking that barrel nut out. No guarantees, but it's likely all you're dealing with here is accumulated crud and neglect

I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman "Were is the Self Help Section?" She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.

Another option is to put some penetrating oil/kroil/etc around the frame threads.  Sometimes you can actually unscrew the barrel from the frame and then get the nut off later.

Just to make sure, the kroil won't affect the blueing on the shroud or frame will it?

had thiis happen and put the stuck one in a bag full of solvents and oils, then installed another with a new nut.  Finally was able to get unscrewed.  The old stlye wrench that is an insert works well as you can mount in a socket or even impact for if you really want to rattle it.

I couldn't find anyone Kroil around here, so I got some PB Blaster which I have read is okay to use on blue guns.  I have just been spraying it on periodically and then tapping on the nut and then respraying.  The barrel wrench I have for it is trying to round off the barrel nut, so I went ahead and ordered one from EWK along with a new nut cuz I feel this one is going to be a nightmare once it is actually free.

I have just been spraying it directly onto the nut, would it be better to maybe put some in a cup and then just let the tip of the nut, barrel and shroud sit in it until the new wrench is here?

I have given up on the barrel nut, now it is just about getting the barrel, shroud, and nut out of the gun.  So I got the materials to remove the whole assembly out of the gun as stated in the FAQ.  I can't get the nuts to actually hold onto the barrel and nut, it just keeps wanting to turn and I am really cranking those nuts on there.  Anyone have some tips for me?

Is is okay to soak the tip of the gun, shroud, barrel, and nut, in PB Blaster?

My new wrench just got here from EWK, and I must say it does seem far superior from that supplied from DW.
