Greetings to all. I've been lurking for awhile, just gleening info as I wet my feet with DW revolvers. I've aquired several .357s and a Dave Pruitt 1911. Now I'm looking into the 44s. I've aquired a 744, but there seems to be an issue with the cylinder free spining after it's open and put back into battery. The rachet paw will not reengage the cylinder unless the trigger or hammer are activated. Isprayed degrease / cleaner into the frame area and then lubed it to no avail.

Any words of wisdom from the the gurus before I start disassembly.

'preciate any advice. Thanks..........

Would this be caused by a weak bolt spring as shown in the 44 schematic?

Anyone?

Yep, that would be my first guess.

Just in case I missed it welcometo the dwf-sign.  First give her a good scrubbing and check the bolt slots in the cylinder for build up. I was amazed at what I dug out of some of them on what I thought was a clean gun. Then check the bolt for burrs. If you still have a problem it might be a timing issue. Keep us informed and others who know more will be along shortly.

It could be a weak spring, or as LB suggested, just gunked up inside. I would take it apart & give it a good scrubbing. Chances are, that will fix your problem. Here's a good disassembly tutorial thread...

Thanks to all that responded. I scrubbed the cylinder externally. Looks like disassembly is the next step. I've reviewed the sticky and it seems pretty straight forward. What is a good source for .44 springs, etc? It seems that the .357 stuff is mostly what's available EKW.

Thanks again for the help and the warm welcome. 'preciate it........

Welcome to the DWF.

For springs, I always go to the factory.  However, a lot of the guys here use Wolf springs and are very happy with them.

I hope that all it needs is a good cleaning.

That's what I'm waging my bets on. It's surprising how much gunk a 30+ year ole gun can accumulate, some more than others. It all depends on how it's former owners treated it...and those owners are all different.wink

Scrub first, then report back.dwf-sign

If it moves fine with trigger/hammer action, my best guess would be the spring is either froze in place, or broken completely.  If you open the cylinder and press down on the stop, does it pop back up on its own?

I took the trigger assembly out last night and cleaned everything. The spring looked fine. What's puzzling is the stop works easily with the assembly out, but hangs up when all together. I took it apart 4-5 times looking for any burrs or whatever. No broken edges are seen. The trigger edges look to have normal wear. I light sanded and reassembled - still sticking. The stop works fine when the trigger or hammer is activated, but when the cylinder is opened, the stop wont reset unless the hammer or trigger is engaged. I'm so confused , but I am getting proficent at removing the trigger assembly laughing.

I'm open for any suggestions.......please.laughing
