Dad (64 yo) came down from Lincoln to visit for the week; mostly fishing but today we decided to go shoot. We headed to the range on Ft. Polk and if there were 2 people, there were 50 so we opted to head to a local "official" shooting area in the hinterlands.
We shot for a few hours and enjoyed the day. I brought some DWs- two 41s and two 44s, Dad brought his Kimber .45. I had him shoot the 41s and he loved them. In the VH version, factory loads a very mild. Well the ammo was a few (20+) years old. Immediately Dad and I noticed the smell of the powder in the 210gr. Winchester 41 Mag was much different than the powders we reload with. None the less he tried to talk me out of one of the 41s since I have more DW M41s than anyone on the block. (didn't work)
A few observations-
The yellow insert front site with Millet target white outline is a very good combination. Until today I was partial to red inserts.
The Hogue grips, while in my opinion aren't asthetically pleasing, felt real good in the hand; the pachys may be coming off…BTW I have small hands: 3 1/2" across the palm.
Finally my Lee TL SWC Boolits group great. All shooting was off hand and I was able to keep them consistantly in the 10 and 9 rings on the shoot-n-see targets at 25 paces. No leading either.
Here's what the wife's SUV looked like when we were packing up to leave:

The correct response to your Dads offer was a trade for his Kimber... pretty that would have ended it... Those are nice (very nice) in thier own right.
I still have just a tich of old Bullseye left, definitely a different smell from the newer powders today. Grand way to spend the day!

The one and only Fort Polk, LA. I've been stationed here, well uh, the family has been here (I come and go) for the last 11 years. I was here once before that, with the 5th Infantry Division in the early 90s. Restationed here in '99 with the 2nd ACR and have been with the NCO Academy and 4th BDE, 10th Mountain Division since (plus a few to three deplyments abroad).
Best Regards,
Ron

Good looking collection.
The custom grip shape on that wood one looks familiar, did you recently grab that from a GB auction?
Um... well, OK- the Ethiopian grips came with the gun- I know you want them. I did receive confirmation last night that the replacement Pachys are on the way. I'll get a grip on the situation soon. Do the medallions come out easily- anyone know?

Ron

I used to live just up the road at England AFB in Alex from 1977 to 1980, hunted alot at the Clayborn and Peason ranges. Bought my 2nd DW a model 15 there and did most of my hunting with it. Some of the best hunting I've done at the time.
We still use England as a reception station and onward integration for units coming to train at the Joint Readiness Training Center in Ft. Polk. Very different looking from 15 years ago, let alone when you were here last. Peason is tough to get access to, but still very good hunting when its open.

First, welcome. That's a nice collection of Dan's.
Second, yes, the medallions come out easily. The y have a pin on the back that protrudes into the wood all the way to the internal cavity. I use the short end of an allen wrench to apply some pressure from the inside. It works very well.
