I finally got the Cylinder & Slide pistol pack that was on gunbroker. Much to my dismay while inspecting it today one of my biggest fears has occurred.
2" barrel (think it's actually 3" w/ 2" shroud) actually has 38spl printed on the barrel, none of the others do.
4" shroud has .357 Mag CTG stamped into the body, none of the others have anything.
Rule of thumb has always been: You can shoot .38spl through a .357 Mag, but not a .357 Mag through a .38spl.
That said, do any of you know why the snubby barrel would be marked .38?

it is not a "rule of thumb"
... a 357 mag cartridge will not fit into a 38 spec cylinder...357 mag cartridge is 1/10 of an inch longer than a 38 spec cartridge.... but since the 38 spec cartridge is shorter it will fit into a 357 mag cylinder
the bullet is the same diameter on either cartridge and will go down either barrel...
I have used 38 spec marked barrel shroud and shot many 357 mag cartridge from my DW 15-2 357 mag cylinder...
I am not sure why some of your shrouds are unmarked

That's what I've always been taught, but my grandfather always told me that the barrels weren't supposed to be built for .357 Magnum pressures either.
However, we are talking about Dan Wesson's pistol packs after all aren't we.
So my worry was genuine, but unfounded then. GTG to shoot the .357 Mag through that snubby.

Sounds like a Pack made up with parts from various sources, with everything refinished to match. While I'm no expert, I can't imagine a reason why a shroud marked for .38 Spl. could not be fired with .357 Magnum. If this was sold as an original Dan Wesson Pistol Pack, refinished and presented in a special case, it's not. A "made up" Pack needs to be presented as such.
I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman "Were is the Self Help Section?" She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.

Only the snubby barrel was marked 38. The mid-sized shroud actually was stamped .357 Mag CTG.
I picked this up to be a shooter, not a show piece, so it's fine the way it is. Once enough scratches get into the finish I'll have it walnut hull stripped and Duracoated.
So far, I found out the 6 inch is a 6 O'Clock hold shooter. Haven't fired the others yet.

If the pack was put together as previously suggested, the .38 barrel could have come from a model 38 or 738.
to the In "DW-ese" those models would be..
8 or 708 (blued or stainless fixed sight)
9 or 709 (blued or stainless adjustable sight)
There is a 5-shot 738+P that's nicknamed 'Lil Dan, and has it's own smaller than usual frame size. I'm pretty sure those barrels & shrouds wouldn't interchange with 'Lil Dan.
Jimmy, that's kind of a bummer that the Cylinder & Slide Pac was made with non-matching shrouds. You could always keep an eye out for a matching .357 shroud before you Duracoat the set.
