I was wondering if I can get by using Winchester 296 powder at 13 gr wt. and a Win. Large pistol/Magnum primer with a .40gr V-Max bullet. The 296 is a little slow burning. What do you guys think?

I've never seen a fireball case that would take a large primer.  I have always loaded them with small rifle primers instead of pistol primers but I use small pistol magnum primers in my 22 hornet contenders.  Looking through my loading notebook I haven't used 296 in any 221 fireball loads so I can't say if that will work.

Well that's good to know. I have seen some reloading books that list  H110 which is the same thing as Win. 296. I have  the small rifle primers. I was wondering what powders some of you guys like for the .221 FB?

I'm not anywhere near my reloading stuff but W296 and H110 are the same, for all intents and purposes.  Get back w/ you in a few months on the load data...

Technically, the glass is always full; half liquid, half air....

I found 13.0 gr of H110 as a starting load in Lee second edition with the max 14.0 gr behind a 40 gr. bullet so sounds like a good place to start.  My go to load is 14.4 gr. of IMR 4227 but that is behind a 50 gr bullet which shoots very well in my xp 100.

Thanks for the info. I made up a few rounds today with the W296/small rifle primer and 40 gr. V-Max. I'm going to check their accuracy and speed with my Chrono. I think I will probably need a faster burning powder, will see.  If anyone has some ideas on powder etc. let me know? Gary

Well I shot my .221 FB today. My reloads were about 100 fps slower then my factory ammo. I can live with that.
