So i just got a new grip, the small rounded butt for my 14-2 (thanks shootist!) but i noticed when i screwed it in that it would not allow me to cock back the hammer. after fiddling with it i put my old grip on and it worked fine so i knew it was a problem with the smaller grip. I know the screw has something to do with the hammer spring (forgot the proper name) so screwing it in too far will make it not cock back. i did get it to work by cocking it back with the screw out, and then putting the grip on and screwing in til it got tight. that did work, but the grip seems to be a little loose. so question.. is there a difference in grip screws? or should i get another and shave it down or what?

I don't know if there's a difference in grip screws, but, a solution to your problem is to add a washer or two to the screw to prevent it from interfering with the spring/plunger.

Yes, there are 2 different length screws, the smaller compact grips use a shorter screw. You may be ok with a couple washers, or maybe get a shorter screw at a local hardware store. A good rule of thumb that I've seen other guys here post, is the screw shouldn't thread in more than 6 full turns, that is plenty to hold the grip on and still keep you away from any interference.

You are on the right track. Full size grips normally take a 8/32 1 1/2" screw and the shorter grips usually take a 8/32 1 1/4" screw. DW and CZ sell origionals for about 4 bucks each. The local hardware store will sell you a proper screw for about 25 cents. Although the head will be a different style of your choosing. A few small washers can also help adjust depth and prevent the screw head from pulling into the wood or rubber with wear.
