Does the barrel and shroud need to come off in order to change to a lighter spring and polish rubbing surfaces.

The barrel and shroud do not have to come off to do the work you are describing, however, I think you'd find it easier to work on the frame with out them mounted.

I tried it once with the barrel and shroud on to, hopefully, save time. About 5 minutes into the project, the barrel and shroud came off.
