I JUST  got a 744 6″VH.. it's a ported model… the barrel is stuck .. before I get out my 18″ pipe wrench.. how do I get this thang off .

Do I soak it somehow first with solvent for a couple of days…

Whats the tricks … Please ?

Wayne

I should mention I read the advise under FAQ... my nut is off.. the shroud moves ever so slightly.. but it will not come forward over the barrel.. should I still use the method discribed there ??

What.. if anything will desolve.. loosen that gunk that is inside the barrel ?

Good luck because I would cry if you had to put the ole 18 inch pipe wrench on a Dan. And BTW if you get the barrel and shroud off the frame the barrel only comes through the shroud one way, unlike other models which will slide through either end. At least it does with my 44's.

Wisdom is merely the realization of how little one knows, therefore I am wise.

Hey Landpanther1,

I had the same problem!  This sounds cruel but it worked.  Since your barrel nut is off I don't think you need to do the other directions.  I held the gun by the shroud and took my gunsmith hammer and gently tapped the frame.  This took a little time but once I got gap to expand pass the alignment pin I was able to unscrew the barrel and shroud together.  Then back to the hammer!

I my gunsmith hammer has both a plastic and brass end so I didn't mess up the frame.

Hope this helps! Good Luck!

So after the shroud barrel came off.. what did you pound on.. I know the barrel.. but what did you use.. a wood dowel so as not to mess up the barrel ?

I'm talking to you on both this post and the chat... I'm confused...

hahahaha..

oh well it's raining an can't plant my sweet potatoes.. so why NOT work on a DW

It's all good.

Wayne,

You might want to leave the barrel in the frame and just keep banging.  Once it gets to a certain point I was able to pull my barrel out with my hands if I remember correctly.

That sounds like the ticket.. I've got a gun smith hammer and a rubber mallet to I should be able do it.. but I'm going to let Shooters Choice work for a while... this is a 4 digit gun and so it could have a lot of build up...

So where does it all build up.. in that little chamber around the holes ?? I've been using an eye dropper to put in the Shooter Choice for the past 3 -4 hours.. and whacked it a few times... got my pinkie once .. THAT was not cool...and  no movement yet.. I may need to REALLY soak this thing.. maybe sight end down in a jar of this stuff..

Thanks again.

Hey Wayne.  Try puting a cork in the muzzle end and filling it from the breach end with Shooters Choice.  That way some of the stuff might get through the port holes in the barrel and into the expansion chamber.  Might help.

I kinda like the "dunk the barrel in the jar" idea. No cork needed with that plan.Laugh

Landpanther,

I was cleaning my 744 ported shrouds tonight from shooting too much lead in it yesterday, it came off easy thankfully, anyway I found that to scrub out the shroud a 12 gauge brass shotgun brush works great.  It fits just right and does not seem to harm anything in the process.

Thanks guys.. the barrel is currently in a jar sight end down of Shooter Choice.. will soak it over night.. hit it with the air chuck to blast out any gunk.. and whack it with my rubber mallet.. hopefully not hitting my pinkie again... lol.. maybe it will come off.. if not..

I'm off to the  hardwarestore to get my threaded rod and nuts and washers to rig up that hi-tech barrel un-threader thingy..

hopefully it will come off....

Don't drink all the wine first before you use the cork...you may end up whacking a few more fingers.poke

Exactly.  I use one every time; works perfectly.

OK.. Here it is .. 11:20 PM... made it to the store.. added a little "improvement"..

I got a 5 1/2"long  piece of clear tubing to go around the 5/16" threaded rod to protect the interior of the barrel.. used WD-40 and a hair drier slip  it on.. took about 18 minutes.. JEEZ.. nothing is easy... but it did what it was supposed to do.

Had to work to tighten the nuts together.. but finally got it set up..

started twisting the rod and it wouldn't budge then then nuts slipped ... tighten the nuts, twist the rod,, did that  3-4 times.. finally the barrel started to move.. or at least I thought it was moving.. then all of a sudden  .."snap"...the shroud started twisting...  I had broken the "Shroud Locating Pin"..$2.95 on the price list... GOOD.. gives me an excuse to order a barrel for something... anyway.. unscrewed the shroud/barrel.. then removed the lower nuts/washers... and located the shroud over a 3/4"  hole in my wooden saw stand and pounded the end of the 5/16" rod from the sight end thru the shroud... it was REALLY welded in with lead fouling...

Spent an hour tonight watching Seinfeld reruns I had Tivo'd earlier.. ( Happy Festivus Everyone lol2 !!)  with a little flash light , a magnifying glass on a stand and 2 dental pics getting the lead out of the inside of the shroud.. got about 10 lbs. worth.. got it all.. still need to steel wool / dremel wire brush the outside of the barrel a little.. but it's FREE...

Best way to get that broken 1/2 of the Shroud Locating Pin out ?? I was thinking I could dremel it out with a small bit.. but I think first  I'll try and use one of the dental pics to get it out tomorrow .

For the life of me.. I can't figure out why someone would buy something as cool as a gun and not take care of it..

Good Night and thanks for all your encouragement.. lol..

Landpanther,

I agree with the why would anyone buy something that cool and not take care of it, but it happens everyday in the world of cars too.  Some must have more money to just go new again I suppose?

Nice work Panther - what a project.

Leads me to ask the same question.  How could someone be smart enough to own that gun and have no clue how to take care of it.  —>or not want to dismantle it just for the sake of set up / inspection / curiousity / fun / etc, etc.

You need something like a tiny “EZ Out” for that pin.  May just a small drill bit on the drill press right down the center.
