I inherited a 15-2 (.357 Mag) Target and shot maybe a 100 rounds. At the range, I got the dreaded click and no bang after firing about 20 rounds. The primers were not marked and I could not see the firing pin protruding with hammer down. The spring seems to work when I push on the back. Is this a broken pin or stuck pin?

I removed the firing pin retaining pin but cannot get the firing pin out to check. It springs forward but  wont pull out. Is there a trick to getting the firing pin out?

Any help or ideas is appreciated before I mail in to Dan Wesson for repairs.

There is no trick to getting the firing pin out. After removing the retaining pin the firing pin should just fall out if it already hasn’t sprung out from the spring tension.

It sounds like there must be some crud (technical term) obstructing your firing pin. Try putting Kroil, Blaster or some other type loosening solvent on it to soak for an hour or so. Keep it wet. Then trying using a bent paper clip or small allen wrench to push it out from the front.

Good luck.

I thought all paperclips were bent.  It’s the straight paperclip that is the specialty tool....

Technically, the glass is always full; half liquid, half air....

You guys are hilarious. Better stock up on paper clips. They won't make them much longer. Paper will be obsolete.

I remember hearing that in the 80's when the digital age was born ...

All, thanks. The paper clip popped it out and surprisingly I didn't lose the spring. The firing pin was broken so I need to replace it. The one I pulled is rounded at back end with a cleft to allow the FP retaining pin to hold it in place. This does not look like the replacement part (#18) from Numrich. My model 15-2 target was made in 1974, so the part may have changed.

Is this part ok?

Are there any other parts I should replace or order as a backup?

Thanks,

I can send you a new firing pin for $6. PM me with your mailing address.

The only other thing you might need is a spring. Unless your spring looks bent or otherwise out of shape, I would try it first before buying a new one. On the other hand they are not expensive, so it's really up to you.

There was an early firing pin with a straight sided pin and a later, stronger one that was conical. The newer one works in the early guns.

Snake-eye sent me a new pin and I installed using my old spring. Both flew out during test fires and lost the spring. It appears the old .075 “ straight pin has a straight spring that doesn’t work with the new tapered (.1” to .075”) pin. Anyway,  will either get the old pin or a newtype spring. Got to love this hobby

OK fixed. The new tapered firing pin and spring do not work in my DW Model 15 (I must have a 15 not a 15-2). The pin gets stuck in the hole. Only the older straight pin (See Model 14 diagrams) works with its straight spring. Shot about 35 rounds flawlessly yesterday.

Special thanks to snake-eye. I will mail your pin back to you.

Hmmm, better search out a few straight sided pins for backups.
