And not just any S&W -- my sons favorite 22 --he is 10.

We were just doing our usual plinking session and when I walked over to his bench he said his gun was jammed.  As soon as I looked at it I knew--top of grip was blown off and parts were twisted out of place.  Nothing wrong up to that point...gun was fine and ammo was the usual bulk pack.

He took a hit in the face, but it left no mark.  And I could tell his thumb was a little sore the way he kept playing with it...

As you can see, it blew the sideplate out from the frame -- it is bent, not just pushed out.  I'm sure we lost a spring or two, and maybe some small part.  Slide was locked back when i picked it up and would not go forward.  Not sure what happened--maybe round went off before being fully chambered.  No real ideas.

I already sent S&W an e-mail with pics--they are closed until 2 Jan.

Best thing is nobody got hurt--my kids both wear glasses and always wear them when they shoot.

Good God, now that's a little too close for comfort!

One would think than something as mild as a .22 would be off limits to the "average guy's loading mishap", but seeing something like this is completely uncalled for in the gun owners (and buyers) community. With each passing year, I'm quickly becoming less of a Smiff fan...and seeing this (on a wimpy .22 no less) does nothing to gain my trust in the company.

Wow.

It's blatantly obvious that S&W's QC has gone to the dogs. Assuming there's even a single dog left alive in China...lol2 har-de-harharr...??!?? frown Groan.

As I said last night, I'm glad he's OK!  Looking forward to hearing what becomes of this.  Have you contacted the ammo manufacturer as well?

Oh, and everyone- ALWAYS wear eyepro just like Shoot's son!

As everyone else said, glad your son is ok! That is a good example why shooting glasses are always advisable.

It sure is scary to see something like that, makes me wonder what the potential is with all the cheap imported autos flooding our country these days.

My first pistol was a S&W model 422 in the late '80s, I always thought it was a real nice 22, I shot it a lot and never had a jam or misfire with it. Those pics make me glad I traded it for a model 17 revolver.

Thats very odd. I'm thankful it was not a .45. That seems like a lot of damage for one round. I wonder if it was two rounds that went off. God bless your son. The Lord was looking out for him. S&W has a great service dept. Needless to say, I would probably use a different pistol. I love the Ruger MK II or III models.

+100 Brother . Thank God the boy is unharmed.

It'll  be hard to say what happened, S&W will want the gun and ammo.

If it is an ammo problem you can bet S&W will throw them under the

bus and let you know it too. But if they don't give you much info on

what was the cause....well... you can figure that one out.

To be honest I don't expect much from S&W or Rem...  Gun is no longer produced. They will want the gun to "examine"--they will charge me to ship and examine it..  then they will charge me to fix it if they can.

I'm not going to sink a ton of money in a repair job when I can find my son another one for not much more cash....and have a parts gun laugh....

Only time will tell--I'm already looking at fixing it myself or scrapping it out.

If it's the gun S&W should'nt charge anything, if it's the ammo S&W

will settle up with Remington. You should be out nothing and if S&W

is worth their salt you will get a pre-paid call tag sent in an email for

Fed-ex shipping back to them.

I agree with Blacktop I would expect S&W to foot the bill on this one.  I had a model 48 reblued and the service was excellent.

Well, I've been slacking on shipping off the 422…but, it is all boxed up and ready to go out monday….

Good news is I found a really nice replacement for it at the gun show today–Very first table in the show !!!  even an upgrade !!!  Picked up the same gun with longer barrel, adj sights, and wood grips for $210 out the door.

WOW... I got thousands and thousands of rounds threw my SW 22A, It was a POS until I got a 1000 rounds + out of it. We used to call it the Jam O Matic, now it is: Oh crap he has the tack driver out. Never had a problem after the 3 or 4 months to break it in. To see it's sister in pieces is scary...surprised

Shoot,

did you find OUT anything about the 422?

S&W did me right and had it completely repaired and shipped back -- no charge.  Seems to shoot just fine again.

Hey shoot did S&W say as to cause of problem, ammo or gun?

Here is my two 2206's, all Stainless Steel and both are tack drivers. I ended up with supressor adaptors for both guns by EWK and have wood off and use the plastic target grips on because they really feel good in my hand.

No response on cause of failure-- as a matter of fact, Remington just finally sent me the pick-up tag for the ammo after 4 e-mails and a threat to pursue through my lawyer.
