I was building a new rifle tonight, so I decided to break out the camera for a few quick shots...

I really enjoy tweaking guns to their fullest potential, and I'm also an accuracy nut--so long range precision is good stress relief.  The closest one with the tan spiderweb stock is my newest project...

From back to front--

--Savage 12 in .223 with Bushnell Elite 3200 7-21 scope and Choate Sniper

--Savage 12 in 22-250 with Nikon Monarch UCC 6.5-20 scope; Choate Sniper

--Savage 112 in 25-06 with Simmons Aetec Japan 6-20 scope Choate Varmit

--Savage 12 (20") in .223 with Bushnell Elite 4200 4-16 scope Bell carlson Stock

I ran across a decent deal on the 20" .223, and had everything on hand to build a nice "lighter" long range rifle.  It is an older pre accu-trigger model--These triggers can be tuned with a little work.  It is just mocked up at the moment--still needs all the fitting and tweaking done--but it looks like it will be a nice rifle.

If you are wondering about the stocks--For what I do the savage factory synthetic stocks just won't do... too much flex.  The Choate is a nice stock, but they are bulky--I bought the Bell Carlson a while ago just waiting for a project--and now it is here.

I just sold my .308 to a local — (Savage 10FP 20" Bell carlson stock)…

http://www.armslist.com/posts/271181/colorado-springs-colorado-rifles-for-sale--savage-10fp-tactical-police--308-20--bull-barrel---sold-pending-funds--

Trying to move the calibers down to smaller sizes… The 25-06 will reach out there and touch stuff…. And there is always the 7mm rem mag or the 300 Win

Gary, I appreciate the "Varmint" verbage... too many times guys walk up and ask me to build them a "Sniper" rifle....  I always ask them what branch of service they are in  and who do they intend to kill... laugh

Too many people toss around the "sniper" word for long range rifles.  Granted, when I'm out at the range with one of my toys and my kid behind the spotting scope we look the part -- but prairie dogs are our victimscool

What kind of ranges are you taking these 'vermits'?  Back in my college days, a bunch of guys would take large caliber heavy barreled rifles and shoot across a valley to the opposite ridge.  They were usually after deer, but same principle.  I'd guess the range at something like 800+yards.

Anything worth doing is worth doing well.

You have yourself a nice set of shooters. I'll bet you and your boys thoroughly enjoy yourselves while in the field.

I spent most of my teenage years varmint hunting…then, I finished college, got married, pursued a career, and had kids (I believe in that order).  Varmint hunting got lost along the way (go figure). I recently got the itch to varmint hunt again and purchased a .223 and 22-250 for my son and I…I can't wait! I just need to work up some loads.

Out here you can take a variety of guns and plink anywhere from 100 yards out past 1000...  on serious days we don't take any shots under 400.  I've never connected on a prairie dog past 668 yards (lucky).  With the lighter calibers they don't dive into the holes from the noise, so you can walk in a few shots.

I grew up shooting groudhogs in PA with a 22-250 mauser (still have it).  Groundhogs are HUGE in comparison to a praire dog.  I want to take a trip to Utah to hunt prairie dogs--They seem to have a lot more shooting opportunities.

I was hunting on a private farm--but the plague wiped out most of the dogs out here.

Took the new .223 out for its first run today...  took three loads, but only the first one was necessary... looks like a great start.

Granted, this is only at 50 yards, but I'm very happy for a first test.
