SALT LAKE CITY -- Except for a few Democratic
jabs, the Utah Senate overwhelmingly approved the Browning M1911
semiautomatic pistol as the state firearm without debate Wednesday.

"This is an opportunity for us to lead out and be innovative as a state," said Sen. Mark Madsen, R-Lehi, the Senate sponsor of HB219.

The Senate preliminarily passed the bill 19-6, with Democrats casting
all the dissenting votes. It still faces a final vote, though barring
something unforeseen, it will easily pass. The House approved the
measure last month.

Other than Madsen, Sen. Gene Davis, D-Salt Lake, was the only senator to speak about the measure.

"I rise on this bill and wonder why," he said. "Usually all of these designations come to us from elementary schoolchildren."

Utah already has 24 state symbols including a cooking pot, dinosaur and
vegetable, several of them brought to the Legislature by school classes.

Davis went on say why not emblazon a gun on the state flag or arm the
bees on the flag. He noted that Mozambique is the only country flag he
could find that has a gun on it, an AK-47.

"I love some of the suggestions you made, ideas for future bills," Madsen replied.

Madsen said the state gun "represents the freedom-loving culture of
Utah." In addition, he said, it recognizes a pioneer and innovator, John
M. Browning.

An Ogden native, Browning is one of the most important figures in the
development of modern automatic and semi-automatic firearms and is
credited with 128 gun patents.

That is interesting.  I've been to Ogden, UT to visit a friend.  Nice area, deer eat all the foliage in the residential areas.

Yeah, we've got our fair share of deer, alright. Sometimes people will get moose setting up camp in their yards too, and they aren't as easy to shoo away.lol2

Now we need to get Massachusetts to get on board with this. I think the Dan Wesson revolver would make an excellent state gun for Mass.DWF Sign

I love it too! Laugh

And how they voted should be a good guide as to how to vote in the Utah elections!

I think this was my favorite part:

"I love some of the suggestions you made, ideas for future bills," Madsen replied.

That will never happen, Massachusetts is about as ungun friendly as they come.  I'm from Connecticut, and a gun store in Massachusetts would not even let me see a long gun because they couldn't sell it to me.  And I have a hunting license and handgun permit in CT.

Yeah, I've heard how MA has degraded into the lefty's bliss during the past couple decades. Sadly, that was more of a tongue-in-cheek remark.Confused It's truly sad–no–pathetic, really…if for no other reason than an historical one! Massachusetts was one of the thirteen original states, by God…any rational thinking person would assume that one of those thirteen would be the last to fall, but that's not the case. It's pathetic how easily the tide has been turned…how easily many of (presumably) our nation's father's decendants have been so easily led into the very pit that our forefathers gave their lives to be free from. So their children & their children's children would have a better place to call their own!

I'm ashamed. Ashamed for what we have become…for what we have LET ourselves become. I know that there are still folks out there who feel this way, who desire to know our history & who desire to know what that history means. But with each passing day, that desire is being replaced with the idiotic "wow, what did Lindsay Lohan wear to court today" mind numbing crap that's constantly being fed to the sponge-like minds of our children…tomorrow's future for our nation.Surprised Holy crap.

If there is a good outcome for America, I don't think it's gonna show itself for at least another 100+ years. At least I probably won't be around to see it hit bottom. My apologies for my crappy attitude tonight, I'm blaming it on Canada…in specific, a few too many tugs on the 'ol  Black Velvet.occasion LOL!lol2

No, I never tug on Cuervo.Big Grin I prefer the northern inebriation stuff myself, much more potent.

BTW, today they clarified the wording HERE stating that J.M.B. was only the 1911's designer & not the maker. Funny, anyone with basic 1911 knowledge already knew that one.

So there's still one final vote to go, but it's looking good.Proud To Be An American

So let me understand this:

The 1911 was devloped to compete in, and ultimately win, a bid process for the US Army.

It went on to become the almost universal defensive weapon for all branches of the US military.

It served continuously for almost 75 years, through 4 major armed conflicts.

Likely saved the lives of HOW MANY Americans, as a last resort defensive weapon?

""I rise on this bill and wonder why," he said."  I wonder why too!

Where is our DWF JackWagon Smiley when I need it so desperately?

There's another term that describes this guy:

A**Hat (I self moderated, eh?)

I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman "Were is the Self Help Section?" She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.

It's past time, John Browning just might be the greatest firearm designer the world will ever see.
