Hello from Texas. Just picked up a DW .357 6 inch from the local pawn shop. Serial Number 22146* Monson, Mass. I think it's a model 15. Not marked anywhere. Full lug and all blue. Front sight blade front-half gone. Where do people get parts? When do you think this gun was made?  Cool gun. Heavy and stout single action cocking spring. Never owned one before.

Well. I am sending out an alert. As above, I just bought a 1979 vintage 15-2VH 6" Monson Mass revolver that came out of a local pawn shop that was in pretty good shape. The front sight was busted so ai found one on eBay and got that as well as a tool kit from EWK. Nice stuff. After failing to get the barrel off, I dribbled some liquid wrench penetrating oil on the barrel nut and the rear forcing cone. After a few minutes, with a little lever assist I was able to get the barrel and shroud off....'

And discovered Rust!!!!

I know that the barrel had probably never been off the gun and so I was a little mystified as too the source of the moisture. Well, I took some real fine steel wool and cleaned the barrel and the inside of the shroud and then oiled it up really good and put it back together.

So my advice to new owners of old guns is to take the barrel and shroud off to inspect them and clean as necessary.

( I wish I had taken a picture, but I forgot until too late. )

You seem pretty savvy. But you need to do the "Average Joe Tuneup" pinned to the top of Gunsmithing. It is a lot of fun and can make your action smoother. If you have adjustable rear  sights you have a model 15. Fixed sights are a model 14. Your gun should have the shortest hammer fall in the  revolver world. At or around serial number 25,000 the trigger got a little ledge the trigger return spring rests on. That made the hammer fall a little longer. Your trigger spring is a little harder to keep it on the trigger while putting the sideplate back on but it is a small price for such a quick hammer fall. I recommend d Wolff reduced power springs. The Wolff trigger return spring is the single best thing you can do to smooth the trigger and reduce the trigger pull. You get an 8 lb mainspring and a 71/2 lb. The 71/2 can lead to light hammer strikes. The factory spring is 9lbs.

I hope your new shroud is from the same model. After Serial number 25,000 they are unofficially called 15-1 and 14-1. The rear sights are different and the front sights will be too low and you will shoot high.

I like to use Flitz paste rubbed into the steel with your fingers. It removes the patina of impercepable rust that builds on a gun that is 50 years old. Wipe it off with a clean soft  lotb and wax the gun with carnuba wax or Renaissance wax.
