OfflineHi everybody!
I found my way here after buying two Dan Wesson .445 SM revolvers at an auction in june. I've fired a few .44mags through them and they seem just fine. .445 brass is now ordered so they can stretch their legs properly.
I'm looking for a barrel shroud tool. Anyone know where I can buy one?
About me: Born 1975, been shooting guns actively since 1995 and I compete at home and internationally in target, PPC and IPSC-competitions.
Apart from shooting I also ride sports motorcycles and do some hunting.
Regards, Karl – Jönköping Sweden

OfflineK-Man, Welcome to DWF. we have a surprising (to me) number of International members here, kind of a testament to how cool Dan Wessons are. Barrel shroud tools are very commonly available on Ebay, and many of those sellers will ship internationally. The are also available from DW/CZ, who will not ship internationally. I (and other members here) will be glad to help out shipping "machine parts" internatinally if that is your last resort.
Someone else will soon post a "demand" for pictures, and I won't spoil their fun
I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman "Were is the Self Help Section?" She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.

Wonder who pointed you in this direction K-Man. 😉
If you had asked me i have two tools, one red and one blue but they look the same and do the same job so i guess its only the colour thats different about them.
If you show up at the next bbq we can do business. 🙂

K-Man. I see jaggman has done the duty on our NEED for pictures here. We have a large appetite for them. I think too it is cool that we have a growing number of international members all with the common quest for Dan Wesson info. The larger we get the more it may cause the current CZ/DW to respect our interests and see that it may be beneficial to reintroduce the revolver line. I think they have a great market to tap, no one has made a revolver that equalks their strength in double action IMHO. again glad you joined and look forwrd to those 445 pics

OfflineWelcome to the group K-Man, Cool pics of some nice toys, but I would hate to be the guy holding the camera.

Pretty Cool
Actually Steve, yesterday, when this was posted I was in CT so we were tied with Sweden for number of members.
The guy behind the camera is really trusting of your abilities.
Ah, I almost forgot --

OfflineI'll let you in on a little secret. There's nobody behind the camera.
The picture is captured from a DV-film and the camera was on a tripod far enough down the range to escape unharmed from the blasts. A couple of friends started joking about aiming for the camera at this competition of course but thankfully they preferred scoring points rather than having to replace a 1000 $ camera.
Thanks for your compliments on my revolvers. I'm actually selling the stainless 8" to my gun club so that any member can borrow it for comps. We will also use it to scare the crap out of people when they come to our club to try out shooting for the first time. A hot .44 or .445sm always bring laughters when shot by a complete rookie
(and holes in the lawn half way out to the targets, haha)
Unfortunately the 8" was actually a bit more manageable and the grip was a bit bigger so recoil was milder even though it's a couple of inches shorter. Better then that the not so experienced shooters will use the nicer of the two. I'm such a nice guy ain't I? (and I get to have the biggest gun in my club hehe
)

I'm actually not too fond of that slotted shroud. I would prefer the blued smooth one with full underlug if there is one like that for the 10" barrel. I'll trade mine straight off if anyone else would.

OfflineIn the 'What model do I have'-thread someone could figure out an approximate age from the serial number. Mine is a Monson 445B001282. Any info on that?
According to Wikipedia the quality got worse as the years went by so do I want my gun to be as old as possible?? Kind of cool to perform as good as it does after 30 years anyway. I competed in a magnum field comp yesterday and hit 45 of 48 targets at ranges between 30-150 yards. I did the same comp with my 7 inch 1911 .45 acp and I didn't do nearly as well.

OfflineThe .445 SuperMag was announced in the Nov. 1988 issue of American Handgunner magazine. The first test they did of the Dan Wesson .445 was in the March 1989 issue. Without digging up my old Silhouette newspapers, that makes it probably around the first month of 1989 when the gun was available to the press...given the lead-time of about 2-3 months for articles to appear in a magazine.
Yours is a Monson gun, so the oldest it could be is 1989. Manufacturing was moved to the Palmer plant in 1992. That narrows yours down to a 3 year period. Mine is a Monson IHMSA gun in stainless steel but the serial number doesn't help, as it is has the IHMSA member's number on the gun. 445S-IHMSA-222.
The machinery was getting a bit worn by the time it went to Palmer, so there were some quality control issues with those guns. Cylinder faces not being cut square and timing issues are the most common, along with some finishing problems. That all depends on the gun...there are many Palmer guns that are just fine, but for that reason, they are held in less esteem than the Monson ones.
Nice job on the shooting there!
It is amazing what these old guns can still do today.
