Hi all,

New to both the forum and Dan Wesson owership.  Hail from Tampa.

I have a question for you all already.  I just acquired a DW 15-2VH ( i think) and appears to be double action only which I find strange since it has a full hammer (with spur.)  Did Dan Wesson make stainless target revolvers in DAO?

Welcome to the DWF Sign.

The answer to your question is nope.

If your gun is  blue then it is probably a 15-2.

If it is stainless it is a 715.

You stated that it has a VH (vented, heavy) barrel assembly, but you didn't state the barrel length.  Is it a VH8, or a VH6, or a VH4, or a VH2.5?  Those are the most common barrel lengths.

Be sure to post some Cool Pics.  We live for pics on this site.  You're going to love your DW.  It won't be long before DWAS sets in and that will destroy your bank account.Smile

Once again, welcome.  We hope you like our little corner of the world.

Thanks Mike.

Ok then 15-2 it ain't as it is SS not blue.  It is one of those kits actually with 4 barrels and an extra grip.  I am sure I will like once I get it out on the range as my brother had a 44 DW years ago that we used to fire.

My main concern is the action.  As mentioned is appears to function in DAO but has a full hammer which I find odd.  My brother's 44 DW (which was very similar this 357) was single and double action.  Here is a photo.

Thanks

Brettt

Welcome to the DWF Sign. Nice 715. Check the grip screw length first. Actually just see if it will cock with the grip off. If that doesn't do it you will have to look deeper. Good luck.

Post me two pics please -- close-ups of the action--cocked and uncocked.

Welcome to the DWF Sign

lbruce nailed it, typically the grip screw is too long or has been tightened down to much.

Thank you to all.  With some scrutiny, the grip screw looks a bit marred so I bet that is it.  I suppose this need to be loosened or replaced.  Does anyone know how this is removed or loosened?

You should be able to push it out of the grip with a screwdriver, punch or similar tool.

The screw thread pitch is nothing special.  You can find replacements at a local hardware store.

OK, I think I have identified my 715's DAO issue.  After you all's helpful posts and some reading/investigation/scrutiny, I see that my Mainspring Guide has been damaged by an incorrectly sized grip screw.  I further see that a new Mainspring Guide is inexpensive, but my question is, is this something changed out easliy?  The change out looks easy but I am wondering if there are some potential pitfalls or required tolerance settings that might warrant a gunsmith?  Thoughts, advice?

I haven't changed one myself, so I can't say for certain...but, I really doubt that it's a part that requires fitting to each individual gun. To me, that part looks fairly interchangeable.  I guess the easiest way to know for sure would be to ask the folks at DW when you order your new part.

Nah-- this is a do it yourself project.  No special fitting required.  While you have it out you can make sure the pocket it drops into is nice and smooth with no burred edges.  And while you are in there, you might as well install a new set of Wolff springs.
