Just purchased this beauty at online auction. First Dan Wesson! Have to wait patiently now for it to be shipped... and then chill out another week for Maryland to again deem me worthy of handgun ownership.  In the meantime I have been "investigating" my purchase.  I cannot find another Dan Wesson pictured with this grip.  Anyone recognize it?  Is there any reason to preserve as-is?  If it is comfortable I might want to refinish if it has no historical value.DanWessonW12Left-1.jpgImage Enlarger

Wow!! A beautifully preserved specimen of a model W12 DW! I would keep it “as is” for no other reason than to preserve history. While the grip profile is not immediately recognizable to me, it is likely original to the revolver. The original owner may have used the “blank” grip provided in those early days to hand carve this grip; in which case it is worth preserving. You can always acquire other grips on eBay that may be more to your personal preferences for actual shooting. Enjoy!!

Beautiful model 12!. The grip could be a hand carved grip from the grip blank available from DW but to me it looks like a user modified Hogue grip. Absolutely no reason IMHO to refinish it. It looks in decent shape. If orthodoxy is desired I would look on eBay for one of the 5 early grip models. The Michigan Target grip or the Sacramento finger groove grip would be my choice. Check on the appropriate forum section for examples.

I guess the question we must put forth is; are you planning to shoot this revolver? If not, I would keep it “as is” to preserve its history. If planning to shoot it, simply choose from a variety of available grips which best suits your preferences.
