Hey guys I just received this email back from Hogue.  I had emailed asking if they would make a set of grips out of Zebrawood and this is what I got back...

Thank you for your interest in our fine products.  Yes we can make you a grip out of zebra wood  however you will need to supply the wood.  I need a "blank" 1 inch thick by 3 inches wide by 11 inches long.  We charge $35.00 in addition to the price of a regular grip of this model and there is a wait involved.  We will not make your grip until we do another production run of these.  Dan wessons are not that commonly run so It could be 90+ days.  There is another option on that but it is more expensive.  If we do a special setup and run you yours sooner you will pay shop time for us to make it.  The one other option that you have is that we already sell a wood similar to and according to some it is the same as zebra wood and that is goncalo alves.  It is a light blonde wood with dark stripes.  We could hand select one for you if we have any good ones in stock.  There is also a fee of $35.00 for the hand selection.  I hope this helps.  Let me know if you have any more questions.

Sincerely

Maybe if we had enough folks interested we could get them to lower the price...

Wow... that seems pretty pricey. You could get an absolutely top shelf piece of wood for $35, except for maybe Snakewood or something super scare and ultra exotic. I definitely wouldn't opt for the "hand-pick"- especially with Goncalo Alves.

Also, the dimensions seem skewed for the blank- 1" thick? Do they make the grips with 2 pieces of wood? Hmm... maybe that's my resolution to my inletting problems with the revlover grips.

I don't know, I would be a little concerned with a 2 piece grip on a 445SM, although I suppose as long as the wood is stabilized and has no defects, it should work fine.

I have no issues with Hogue though. I had a problem once, and they handled it professionally and immediately. In fact, I might be interested in sending them some snakewood if we can get a few people in on this in order to drop the price.

I would be game for a group discount.  I would want one piece grips though.  The blank would have to be about 2+" thick I beleive if they are doing it right.  What is "Snakewood?"

After further consideration, with Zebrawood, and many other woods, It could be done in 2 pieces.   I think it would be next to impossible, if not impossible, make 2 piece grips from Cocobolo… it's too oily and pretty much nothing adheres to it.

Sorta sounds like a $100 pair of grips, unless we can get a group discount.Surprised And which grips are we talking about, large or small frame?

You can still buy the small Zebras from CZ.  I am needing large frame ones, that you cannot get from CZ and on ebay the sell for $150.00 and up.  I would give $100.00 for a nice smooth set of large frame Zebras.

Charger, you optimist you.

You forgot to add the cost of your blank. Sounds like before it was said and done, you'd be looking at $125+, unless they were shipping for free.

I REALLY need to find a solution to my inletting problem. I would be up for making a bunch of these if I could overcome this hurdle.

Jody, since you are already in communications with Hogue on this matter, could you ask them about the blank measurements? They would HAVE to be 2 piece grips with the specs they sent you. Thanks.

OK!  We got $125 + shipping.  Now, every commercial endeavor overcharges for shipping, so let's say $15 for a total of $140.  That price is awfully close to the current eBay norm of $150.  There are a lot of people here (not me) who would balk at that price, regardless of the fact that the market is commanding $150.

Then, what would they look like?  Personally I'm not in love with the Hogue style.  I prefer the standard "target" style.  But that's just me.  I think it's a great idea to go looking to see what can be done.  Kudos to Jody for taking the initiative on this.

I just got a set of small frame Zebra target grips on the ePlace, bought it from a Pack Breaker, for $100 shipped. I have a beautiful Hogue Goncalo Alves for DW, and IT'S NOT even close to Zebra. One of the reasons I like the DW Target Zebra grips is that they are a DW "signature" item, and I want them with the DW medallion, in DW Target grip configuration, or they're not the right thing for me.

I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman "Were is the Self Help Section?" She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.

Woops, I fogot I can't just send in a hunk of drift wood.lol2 Didn't even think about shipping, either.Embarassed

Steve's reminded me of a good point. A lot of what makes the zebra grips unique is that they are pretty much a DW only deal. I've recently seen some grips that looked really close to zebra wood on a Smith, but they didn't have that same uniqueness to them that the DW grips do.

Now if we could arrange to have the logo engraved into the grips, that might be a whone 'nuther thing.Laugh Remember the newer style Pac that was on GB a while back? It had the logo engraved on one of the grips...sorta wish I kept that picture, now. Probably just as well, because engraving would probably push the grand total near $200 after it's said & done.Confused

If there was a DWF on that grip, I might be game-that's a one-of-a-kind

There is a new idea.  An inlay with DWF.  or even DWAS!  Corny huh?  Unique yes!  We all would understand.

DWCA!  I love it!

$150 is pretty pricey, but these are modern times, eh?

Make me appreciate the Zebra's I have a whole lot more.

--->We need to solve the inletting problem and set CDF up with a small business opportunity!  I would definately be in for a set.

That Snake wood is some great looking stuff / bordering on overkill for a set of grips (IMHO).

I would go for a set of snakewood target grips with a DWCA inlay.  They would dress out an intended nickel project I have in mind.

This may be of absolutely no help, but Sears sells a (not so cheap) woodworking version of a CNC machine...

I agree- it may be just slightly overkill for grips. But, what else you gonna do with wood like that?Laugh

This is one of those ultra exotics that doesn't come around very often, and when it does, you will pay dearly for it. Snakewood and Pink Ivory are probably  the 2 most difficult to find and expensive woods, per board foot, that you can buy.

LOL- you  must be psychic.

That's what I was doing last night. Cost prohibitive, to say the least.

Now.... if I can sell a boatload of 1911 grips, something like that might be a consideration. All I know for sure is that I won't sell another Dan to make something like that happen- been there, done that.
