What are most of the scope mounts made from?

Just curious on what most of the scope mounts are made out of? Alum? Steel? Stainless? I can get a 12" rail made to my specs for free out of alum. but the guy said it would oxidious my shroud.

Mine are made of aluminum, no shroud or barrel problems as of yet and I have one
rifle that has had the mount on 20 years now .

In days past most were made from steel. However these days I think aluminum has become more common. There are still steel/stainless steel ones around. You'll find a lot of the "high-end" scope rings made out of steel.
