Every evening I take the dog out for her "Last Waltz" in the hope that there won't be unpleasant surprises in the morning.

The unpleasant surprise that I saw in the middle of the very well travelled street (in a suburban, residential neighborhood) less than 15 yards  away... a coyote. Surprised, but not shocked, coyotes are known in our area.

Now when I walk the dog, I take a "friend" along

I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman "Were is the Self Help Section?" She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.

Forgot to take the dog for a walk one night.. He had an accident sometime overnight and the Roomba never missed a beat....  spread it all over half the house.  Talk about an unpleasant surprise in the morning...

Technically, the glass is always full; half liquid, half air....

Now that is funny. I think that the dog gets extra treats and Roomba gets a TimeOut

Do you walk with a leash or free reign ?

We have black bears in our neck of the woods and I wouldn't want my dog having a confrontation with any kind of wildlife ... it rarely ends well.

Steve, try 38 spec shot shells in your friend. They work very well at night. Couple of days ago a possum was on the porch eating the cat food. I was amazed at how effective they are. At 15 yards it may not be fatal to a coyote or more likely a coywolf, but it will either teach him caution or render him still for a coup de grace.

The "friend" is a Ruger LCP with a +1 magazine, Laserlyte red dot, and the most capable .380 ammunition I can find.

As always, the most important part of this is awareness and understanding the situation, and being prepared. Our evening walk takes place away from trees and shrubbery, pretty well lit, and me understanding what might be out there.

I hate walking outside late at night and getting surprised by a skunk or big racoon.  I've been known to take a ''friend'' along too.  Usually my Sig P250 in 40 S&W.  I won't shoot a skunk for obvious reasons, but we also have seen a few bears in my area so better safe than sorry.  BTW I think a 40 would only piss off a bear but the noise may scare it away.

Anything worth doing is worth doing well.

I'm on the east coast of Fla, by the water. We moved here three years ago from South Fla. I was very surprised

to learn that Sebastian has bobcats. I haven't seen one yet, but two years ago, one tried to drag a shark out of

the ocean.

From the ears, that looks more like one of our Florida Panthers, but man is he starving.

If that's a shark, I'm Santa Claus...looks more like a baby seal from my vantage point. 🙂

CF, down here we have what are called spiny dogfish in the surf every dozen yards. Small sharks rarely 4 feet long. If you are not careful they can nip a foot or hand, thinking it is a bait fish. If the tourists knew what was in the breaking waves with them they probably would stay in the pools. It is unnerving to see them 3 feet away.

We don't have seal here....and Fla panthers have long tails.

It could be a leapshank - just a joke. When I worked at the beach years ago, we used to tell people to be careful of the leap shank, they were running this time of the year.
