I have an original 45 that my father was given by my brother in late seventies when he worked for them on Mass. It has his name JJ..... as serial number. He was a tool maker for them. Will make this gun worth more a s a collectors item.

A revolver in .45 cal. is a collector's piece in its own right because of the rarity, but I don't believe the personalized serial number adds anything to the value.

To me, I have always thought that a personalized serial number detracts from the value of a firearm if it references somebody's name. That being said, a 45 long colt would be an exception to my thoughts on that. Also, If the person referenced in serial number was famous, that would add to value. This is all just my perspective, and isn't meant to add or detract to any value on a firearm. As always, firearms are worth what somebody is willing to pay for them.

Ed, the value of a collectable firearm, or any firearm for that matter is tremendously dependent on  condition of the firearm. However, serial numbers seem to be more important where quality control issues or changes in manufacturing procedures  occurred and there is no other way of decerning the age of the gun. I am assuming it is a Monson rollmark. The gun probably dates from the mid 80s. The large frame Dans debuted in 1980 with the 44 magnum I believe.

Dan Wesson very happily did custom S/N's for friends, family, employees, and on special request. I am familiar with one list of about 90 guns with "three initial-1 digit" serial numbers. Lot's of southwestern Massachusetts, some Rhode Island, Maine, New Hampshire Pennsylvania addresses.

I agree that a .45 Colt (or any large frame) would have likely be more 1980's. One of the less common production guns in the DW lineup and a treasured family heirloom, Welcome to DWF.

I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman "Were is the Self Help Section?" She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.
