Does a gun turning plum effect the value?? In the 90's when I worked with a gunsmith, when the bluing solution got too hot it would turn the parts plum. This plum seems different. Seems blue at first then turns plum with age.

I believe it does. Their are some owners that seem to like it or does not bother them. I would say if your buying the gun as a shooter go ahead. Use the plum to try to get it at a lower price. If your buying it as a collectible and not planning on shooting it I would say yes it does effect the price and makes it more difficult to sell. THis is just my opinion. Also when buying a Monson gun be careful as sellers will take pics in a darker setting to hide the fact that the gun is plum. If your not sure ask for more pics and also maybe ask for a pic in the sunlight. Plum really shows up in the sun. I have had guns that fooled me they look really good but then when I take them into the sun or use a bright flashlight it shows up. I mention Monson guns as most other later guns they fixed the problem with the bluing. You hear the term "Palmer blue" Palmer and Norwich guns all seem to really have the bluing process down. I have only seen one or two Palmer guns that have any plum on them in fact the newer Palmer's (they were made from 1991 thru 1996) so the first year they started making Dans in 1991 it took them a bit to get their shit together. anyway again this is just my opinion but I stay away from plum guns. If your going to be buying a Monson guns be picky or just buy a stainless gun! I have a couple of Palmer guns a 40 Supermag and a few others the bluing is fantastic almost as good as the Colt Pythons were! The 40 (357 supermag) is a Palmer. The other two are Monson. The one with red circle is a 15-2 hiding plum but throw a flashlight in it and it shows up! The second pic is a Monson 44 mag it was really nice but I will say alot of the Monson 44 magnums always have plum! Also it only showed up on the frames. The barrels and cylinders were made seperate and seemed to be fine. I was told by Eric Wesson it had something to do with the silica. Screenshot-2025-04-30-6.15.09-PM.pngImage Enlarger

I'm looking at a 375 S Mag that is plum. I am gonna shoot it, but not like the old days of Silhouette shooting.  It is mostly rounding out my Super Mag collection.

No, I don't have a 414, but I'm seriously thinking of sacrificing a 357 S Mag to make one.

It's possible....

Technically, the glass is always full; half liquid, half air....

Yes, that’s been done. My thread about my conversion is lost apparently.

That's too bad .. lots of interesting stuff. Remind me again about the barrel threads in the frame. Did you drill the 357 threads out and tap the new 41 threads ?

No I had to machine the 357 SM threads on a 41 cal blank. The 41/414/barrel nut threads are (21/32) .655-40 tpi and the 357/360 are (21/32) 655-32 tpi. A blank needs to be purchased or in my case a 10” barrel was made into an 8”. Don’t worry it was damaged and would’ve been scrap otherwise.
