I will admit it. I was wreckless trying to acquire that DW before someone beat me to it. It was DWF members that got me to pump the brakes and take a look at the situation objectively, and saved me from kissing my $$$$ goodbye forever. So Thank you!

Sometimes a symptom of

What other DWF members reminded me recently:
If he won't take the time to call you, or let you call him, there's a problem. Email addresses and ph#s are spoofed all the time.
Ask for a picture of the item with that day's newspaper or date written on a piece of paper with it. Scan the internet for old identical images of what they posted or sent. If the pictures are poor resolution, and him to retake on a different background
In person: Meet at local Police Station.
Public place: You choose the location.
Unknown location? WHY? Take a friend. An armed friend is better.

And take time when bidding and make sure you didn't press the wrong digit on your phone . My new phone's keyboard seems a little twitchy. I keep pressing 2 instead of 1. That can be a $1000 error. Or some part of $1000.

I will only use personal check if purchasing from unknown individual…..gives you time to stop payment
Also, if after cashing you determine it’s fraud, USPS will investigate as Mail Fraud.
Another good option is using GunTab.com …..works really well

"Scan the internet for old identical images of what they posted or sent." I'll add: use Google lens or a reverse image search tool.
Never pay via PayPal Friends & Family (F&F), Zelle, Venmo (personal), Cash App, wire transfer, or cryptocurrency. Scammers will claim F&F avoids high fees; offer to cover the ~3% Goods & Service fee yourself to test their reaction. If they refuse G&S even when you pay the fee, walk away immediately.
Use full tracking and adult signature confirmation upon delivery for high-value items or mailed payments.
Technically, the glass is always full; half liquid, half air....

He got me $580 (potentially, $1160). I did everything, (or so I thought), right. I looked up cpt jack on the Forum. I saw he's been a member for a while and is also a Dans Club member. I searched his real name and found a boat captain in Tampa with that name. So far, so good right? He sent me pictures and there was a price drop. I asked for more pictures which he sent. Turned out to be a Palmer barrel and I just happen to have a lonely Palmer 15-2. Tried paypal and his account was locked (or so he said). He told me to dispute the charge (which I did) and send the money by Zelle which of course I did. Fatal mistake. Like I said, everything seemed to check out. Then I saw the post on the Forum about the fraud, my heart sank. So that's my story. I got the info a little too late. That being said, with the help of Scout, his name is on file with the FBI internet crime unit IC3 (where I have filed charges of course). Also filed claims with paypal and my credit card. I realize I broke the cardinal rule for about sending money with Zelle. That damn DWAS. So excited to see the barrel common sense to a back seat. Lesson learned, albeit a very expensive lesson. Let this be a warning to everyone, learn from my mistakes. Don't let emotions get the best of you. As you can see, everything seemed ok until it's wasn't. Thanks for listening,

Well, sorry to hear about Wolf. If I had known before I would have shouted it out. I think in his case it was just a barrel so it ran under the radar. It the case of the SRS red flags should have flown up but we are all looking for that good deal. I was just lucky to have done some business already with Capt Jack and had his email on my computer so I shot him an email about the gun. THen he returned my email saying "what gun" I knew right then something was wrong. I wish they could get the message (PM) It's easy to get wrapped up in a deal that looks to good to be true. This happen to me on GunBroker and I kept asking questions. Finally asked the guy to take a pic of the gun in front of a dated newspaper. That was the last straw. Buying guns online is a bit dangerous I always ask for FFL info from sellers but in case of just a barrel it's tricky. I wish I had a barrel for Wolf I would sell it to him below cost. Everyone be careful out there!

Great news. I learned today they recovered $580 in total from the bogus transaction. Special thanks to Scout728 who provided what may have been critical information. HURRAY, more money for DWAS. Sometimes the system works in our favor.

Another tip:
Don't ever try to buy a gun from someone claiming to be "Dan Wesson Shop" or any permutation of the name. There are several scam sites with names such as "DanWessonGunshop", "DanWessonShop", "DanWessonStore", etc., etc.
The real Dan Wesson website is, "DanWessonFirearms.com", and they DO NOT sell guns online!
