I recently purchased a barrel assembly with highly polished 8" standard shroud, the underlying barrel in blue and a drilled blue Buehler scope mount .  I'm thinking the shroud may be a white/blued barrel with the bluing removed. I know some or maybe all (?) stainless shrouds have an "S" stamped on the face that meets the receiver. Could this shroud be stainless or most likely white? Any definitive way to tell? I would like to add this BA to one of two sets but am unsure whether I should get the shroud re-blued. Any thoughts?

Check with a cold blue pen to see if a metal is stainless or in the white.

Technically, the glass is always full; half liquid, half air....

What Ron said, that is an excellent way to tell stainless from 'white' steel.

Thank you for the responses. Would the same be true by using Brownell's Oxpho-Blue? Would you apply to the mirror polished side or the end?

From your photo, it looks like the shroud was buffed to remove the bluing with the scope mount attached and buff marks show on the scope mount. I bet if you remove the mount you will see a blued top rail underneath.

That's what I thought also. Oxpho-Blue did work, I tried on a barrel I knew was blued and on this one - BIG difference! Got a nice stain on the other shroud with the OB, not a hint on this shroud. It appears that this shroud was stainless and then polished and mounted with a blue Buehler.

Thanks for the help!!!
