I am gonna take a whitetail this season w/ my dw-15. I am thinking a hardcast 158swc through the lungs should work well. Does anyone have any deer loads that they have actually used? Let me know.

Never hunted with mine... but thought about it. To me, I want to put as much punch as I can get on that load, meaning I want a 357 versus my normal target load. I seldom to never put a non-jacketed bullet with a 357. My .38s run about 800 to maybe 950 FPS. The 357 should start at 1000 and run up to what ??? 1300 FPS??

I agree to the 158 grain, I used to could find even bigger, but never bought them and even if did, I dont know that my reload guy would know what to with it!

I do hope others respond. Other than a .22 I dont even own a hunting rifle.

Soap Box, Ballot Box, Ammo Box

in that order.

I have taken deer with .44 mag, .445 Supermag and 475 Linebaugh.  The .44 calibers always use Hornady XTP's.  I use lead bullets by Cast Performance in the Linebaugh.  I also have taken a hog with a 7414 using XTP's as well.  I am sold on the XTP's performance.  I have not hunted with the 357 caliber yet, just too few hunting opportunites and so little time to try them all Cry.  I do have some Hawk Bullets I plan to try as well in the near future.

For what my opinion is worth Confused

I have taken many deer with the 44 XTPs in a muzzleloader.  They work just fine, but they do have a tendency to shed their jacket.  Hornady doesn't bond the jacket to the lead.

I took many a PA whitetail with the 357.  Get some hornady 158 XTP's and settle on a heavy load your gun likes.  PA whitetails with a shot in the vitals pretty much drop on the spot if the range is kept within reason.

Thanks shoot. I'll give that a try. I'll have to look in my manual. I figure about 50 yards will be my max. I can keep it w/ in about 5 inches at that distance from a sitting or standing position 2 handed unsupported hold firing single action. My biggest concern w/ hollow points is over expansion w/ limited penetration. I will be using a 4 inch barrel w/ the gap turned down to  .002 to maximize velocity. I know this might seem a bit short but, it's what i am used to and shoot the best with. I'll post some pics this season. Also if anyone is interested let me know and I'll post some pics of how effective a 148 grain DELWC is on small game (tree rats).  I prefer shot directly through the center of the chest.

Deer are thin skinned and if you hit them properly behind the shoulder, you'll get penetration clear out the other side.  I believe hornady has 2 versions of the XTP available now--have to do some Googleing this afternoon and check it out.

This year I'm useing a 158 XTP ovr 16.5 gr of H110 in my 15-2 8", It shoots great and should be running about 1500fps.

I have taken 2 deer 8yds and 24yds with my Ruger sp101 3 incher with factory 158JSP, full pass throughs but little to no expansion/damage. The doe at 24yds went about 150 yds and the blood trail was light.. I think the XTPs should work much better.

Wow, a nearly two year resurrection!  Welcome to the Forum.  I used XTPs for several deer and was very happy with the results.  I cast now and love the "thud" of lead...

I got a S. TX spiker and a medium sized sow with my 715 last fall. Used the Hornady 158gr XTP for both. Then  took a doe with an interesting load. In a hung over pre dawn load and gear up, I loaded some Hornady 125gr FTX Critical Defense by mistake. I'm pretty sure the doe couldn't tell the difference. wow

My favorite .357 Load is 16.3 grains of H-110 pushing a 158 Grain XTP.  Since I generally carry Supermags to hunt with, just because, I have not actually taken anything with this load other than alot of wounded paper.  But it is accurate.
