DW acquisition #6 arrived today. And I am confused...

I found the label under the foam padding. The serial numbers match and the seller says he bought it in 1978-79. This picture should explain my confusion. Anyone offer any opinions?

Since the serial number matches, I'm guessing that someone made a mistake at the factory when affixing the label. That would be easy to do.

It's an unusual pac type. Don't know if it's accurate to call it "rare" but I've only seen a couple. Definitely not common. The Vent Heavy is probably the most popular, but the Heavy is really attractive.

Nice pickup! How does it shoot?

I haven't had the chance to fire it yet as I just took possession. Lock-up and timing seem good...the 6" barrel has corrosion on the bottom of it though...something the seller failed to mention. It's bubbled up and certainly not freckling which he didn't mention either!

The S/N is correct for the year stated by the seller. The "H" shrouds are the least commonly seen style. It is very possible (as noted earlier) that the label was incorrectly identified as "Vent" instead of "Heavy". I may also be that somewhere along the line, the VH shrouds were sold off, and H shrouds were added back in.

I really like the look of the Heavy shroud

I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman "Were is the Self Help Section?" She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.

I like the look of the Heavy shrouds too.  That was a very nice score!

I had a pac like that a few years ago but I traded it away for another Dan I wanted more.  I kind of regret parting with it now though.  Oh well.

That's the source of my confusion DanFan...mislabeled is the consensus it seems.

Thanks for everybody's input.

Now my dilemma is if I should return it...seller offered to refund purchase price and shipping. What can be done about a barrel corroded to the point of bubbling the blue?

You don't harm the value if you have it refinished.  Or, just shoot and enjoy.

Depending on the price paid, and how bad you want VH shrounds.  Might be some around these parts looking for the H BA's.  I would keep and look for the VH shrouds along the way!

Heavy shrouds are very uncommon, to the right collector might be worth a lot in trade or for sale. If you are doing any refinishing, Fords Guns has a great reputation
