I picked up the 740 SuperMag that I was inquiring about the other day. It has been shot, you can tell it was enjoyed - there is some strap cutting and though the barrel and cylinders were clean inside, there was a lot of build-up around the cone and on the front of the cylinder. So, I spent some 'quality time' and cleaned her all up and was smiling the whole time.
Even my wife was very curious and asking questions while holding it.....this was the first time she has ever asked me how much I paid for a gun. I looked at her with evil shifty eyes and asked her why she wanted to know? She smiled and said, because I don;t want you to ever sell this one. 🙂 Yes.
The box is not matching the serial number to the gun. This was part of an estate sale, and the other 740 in his collection was a 6" and that serial number doesn't match this box, either. Perhaps it was a mix-up when the fellow first bought it, because almost every gun had original boxes and paperwork. The spare barrel is blued and it has never been shot. All the original paperwork is in the box, as well as a $10 gift certificate to buy a spare barrel from Dan Wesson.
If anyone can assist with a manufacture date, I will thank you in advance - Serial # SE001154. There is a hand written tag in the box saying 1985 and the weight of the gun - I wasn't sure if that belonged to this or not.

1985 is probably pretty accurate. SE00143x is known to me to be a 1986 from a totally reliable source
I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman "Were is the Self Help Section?" She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.

Thanks, Steve. You can add it to the list if you'd like, though I cannot 100% verify the date. The spare barrel is blued, looks like the SuperMag barrel with the ridges on both ends, but the paper wrapper says 1979 for that barrel (I still think this box/paperwork is for another serial numbered gun). Were they making SuperMags that early - or is the paper wrapping really reliable?

Ian (and everyone else), the barrel wrapper can be a device for dating manufacture of a DW. There were points in the transition times that the large onhand supply of paper wraps were transferred as assets from one manufacturing entity to another, and utilized as any asset would be.
The wrapper is one piece of DW history that is a little frangible, take those dates/years with a grain of salt.

The 1979 barrel tube wrapper is a dime a dozen and was used for a very long time, so I believe it is not an accurate dating item.

^ thanks for the confirmation, it is kind of what I figured. I managed to pick up a set of finger groove wood grips - which, to my surprise, actually fit my alien-large hands. I am now polishing up this old beast with Mags and elbow grease; the scratches don't lift easily.

Try finding Scotch Brite abrasive pads. The green ones are really common as they are used for kitchenwares. I would avoid the green...but if you can find a hardware or online supplier, they come in white, gray and a reddish-brown color that are dandy for use on SS Dans. The abrasiveness increases up from white.

Mother's Mag Polish, elbow grease and a quick touch on my buffing wheel (I use it for my pipes) and now it's finger-print leaving shiny. Installed the new grip and can't stop fiddling with it.

Beautiful. I think Dan Wesson made the model 40 starting in the early 80s.perhaps 1982 or 83. Almost the same time as Ruger came out with the 357 Maximum. 740 probably shortly after.

I feel like I lucked out when I got my model 40 with original Box and ALL the cool paper work! I especially liked the RED tag and the ownership letter. Kewl Stuff!

My registration finally showed up so I took my boys to the range and gave this SuperMag our inaugural run. We had a few other rifles and a .22 pistol with us as well, just to mix it up a bit.

My student is from Mexico City, we have had students from all over the globe over the years. Prior to him coming to our house, he had never shot a firearm before and now he comes to the range with me as often as he can. Every student we have hosted has always loved shooting my firearms.
I have picked up a few hundred cases now for the SM, just need to get the proper dies and bullets.
