Can not get elevation right on my Valor, with a .180 front sight shoots 1.5 inch low, when changed over to .160 front sight shoots 1.5 inch high. Common sense would suggest .170 front sight, but Dan Wesson does not offer a .170 sight, so I am on my own. I am surprised that DW does not back up their flagship 1911. What complicate this more is that the front sight has the Springfield cut which makes it impossible to find. Any suggestions or should I just be more persistent with DW to get this fixed.

Try contacting DW in Norwich I'm sure they can help.

Theres also a great Dan Wesson group at 1911forum.com who may be able to help also.

What yardage are you sighting in at?  I believe the factory sights are dialed in to 25 yards.  Regardless, for your situation I'd place the taller sight on and using a file and light touch; go to work until it's where you want it.  A q-tip of cold blue or some sight black and you have your custom front sight, set to your style of shooting.

Regarding availability of a .170"- the industry standard (in that range) is either .160 or .180 as they run in .020" increments until you get over .200".  So, you can either adjust the height yourself (as above) or adjust your hold.  Up to you.

Stop by the new member section and tell us more about yourself...

Thanks for the reply, was thinking of filing down the sight but the front sight is a night sight.  There are .170 front sights out there but only for a Novak cut, not a Springfield cut.

tyger99: Have you posted in New Members?

I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman "Were is the Self Help Section?" She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.

This might sound like an odd question;

Are you using the same ammo when testing?

(example only) For instance, if you were using Win1911/WhiteBox with the .180 sight, then swapped out to the .160 sight and ended up using American Eagle instead...That could also be effecting your POI.

Winchester White Box (230gr FMJ)  835fps

Win1911 (230gr FMJ) 880fps

American Eagle Red Box (230gr TMJ)  890fps

Federal Gold Medal (230gr FMJ) 860fps

Remington UMC (230gr FMJ) 835fps

As you can see, it may seem like a small spread, if you tested the .180 with an 835fps round then tested the .160 with an 880/890fps round, it could really throw off your results.

(If you are consistent in your testing and always use the same ammo, then cool, this may help someone else who was not quite so aware of the differences in Factory ammo, and I won't even approach handloads for this discussion.)

Dawson Precision offers front night sights for Dan Wesson 1911's in .005 increntments. They also have a wide selection of  F/O fronts. My PM-C also shoots low, but I will contact Keith first and see what he has to offer before going to Dawson on my own.

I just recently bought a 1911 9 mm D.W. Valor Combat. The gun shoots 5.5 inches low at 5 yards, 4.5 inches low at 7 yards and 3.5 inches low at 10 yards. I eventually sent the gun back to D.W. for correction. I was first told that the gun shot 1.5 inches to the side of the bull's eye and when corrected shot perfectly on the center of the bull's eye at 30 yards. I was then told that the gun shot perfectly at 7 yards and 15 yards. Huh??!! It's not going to shoot in the center of the Bull's eye at all of those distances with a bullet that has an arc in its travel. Furthermore, I use this gun for a carry piece. I am never going to use this gun in a gun fight at 30 yards. The gun is on its way back to me and I will see what D.W. service is like. I have been speaking to Endre. Is there anyone else that anyone can recommend to contact if this problem still exists?

Bellman74 - are you bench shooting? If not, may be grip technique.

If you're going to drink, don't drive. Don't even putt.
