OfflineFrom Wilson Combat:
- The proper recoil spring weight for a 1911 pistol is dependent on the caliber, length of the barrel, and the tension of the hammer spring.
- It is advised to tune your spring weights based on the type of loads you prefer to shoot most often. Â If you shoot mostly lighter loadings, use weights at the lower of the spectrum; conversely if you prefer heavier or +P loads, try heavier springs.
- For all-around reliability try spring weights in the median of the recommended spectrum.
- If your pistol fails to lock back on the last round after installing a new recoil spring, you may need to try a lighter weight spring.
- Wilson Combat recommended spring weight ranges are as follows:
Â
| Caliber/Barrel length | Recommended Recoil Spring Weight Range |
| .45 ACP 5â | 15-18.5# |
| .45 ACP 4.25â | 17-20# |
| .45 ACP 4â | 18-22# |
| 9mm 5â | 10-12# |
| 9mm 4â | 11-13# |
| .38 Super 5â | 13-16# |
| 10mm 5â | 18.5-2 |
Â
When replacing your pistolâs recoil spring it is important to remember to change your firing pin spring at the same time.
- The firing pin spring is one of the most important springs in your 1911 pistol.
- A weak or broken firing pin spring can cause a failure to fire and can also reduce the drop-safe qualities of your pistol.
Hope this helps.

OfflineCurrently DW is using 16# spring in 38 Super for factory ammo, due to increased power of factory ammo. Not sure about the 38 Super Guardian as I would have to go look up my records to be sure. I have some factory 38 Super ammo that is 124gr and 1350 fps or more I carry in the Guardian. I have some Razorback 10mm factory loads 150gr Extreme Hunter rated at1425fps that's not hottest load offering, and why DW recommending 21lb recoil spring.
EDITED for ammo correction.

OfflineSounds right to me, IIRC it was 14# in the 5" 38 Super Razorback of mine, but would have to look up emails. Oops time to leave for doctor appointment.

OfflineThey use only silicon wire springs now, so they should never wear out, except for maybe serious competition shooters, shooting thousands of rounds a year.

Just acquired a Gaurdian 38 super, a Pointman 38 super, and a Vigil cco 9 mm. All fine weapons. I am finishing breaking and want to tune the slide springs. Can anyone inform me as to the stock weight of each guns slide spring..? Â
The term is recoil spring, not slide spring.
