Spent  a couple of hours looking thru old posts but haven't found any on stripping the finish off of an old, really beat up grip. Could I just use finish stripper from paint store? i suppose this is a stupid question, but will try anyway. I would like to try a oil finish if I can get the old stuff off. On the bright side, read a lot of great posts on other issues. Thanks always.

I have refinished a couple grips, I just used regular paint/finish stripper like you said. Rinsed the grip well with warm water after to get all the stripper out of the nooks and crannies. I then used Truoil to refinish.

If the grip has medallions, I suggest you remove them first

I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman "Were is the Self Help Section?" She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.

Ditto on removing the medallions first. Paint stripper will do fine and you may want an old tooth brush if the grip is checkered. If the grip has no checkering a simple sanding will do the trick. Just be sure not to remove any wood where it mates to the frame. Good luck and looking forward to some  pics.

Hang it from a brass hanger outside and spray it down with Easy Off (cold oven) cleaner.  Use something to catch the drippings, or do it in the neighbors yard...  Once it stops eating away the finish, run it under water and clean it off.  You may need to repeat.  Let it dry, sand it down, and refinish with what you want.  I prefer tung oil to bring out the natural grains.

Technically, the glass is always full; half liquid, half air....

Not trying to hijack this but...

Now feeling inspired... A trip to the garage with the 44 grip... stripped with the above Formbys refinisher and steel wool... fresh black and a quick trip over some 400 grit... Some Formbys tung oil, probably 10+ coats...

Just a side note on refinishing, the courser grit you use the item will soak up more stain.

Would someone be so kind as to describe the proper technique to remove the medallions from the grip without breaking said medallions or harming the wood inleting where the medallions reside?  I have an old grip that I would like to refinish but do not have any idea how to remove the medallions.  Thanks, Ward

The center pin on the DW medalions stick in a hole that goes all the way through the grips, I just took a small hook and popped them out from the inside.

I usually use an allen wrench to accomplish this.  Makes the job really easy.

Thanks guys.  I saw the holes inside the grips, but I thought that the medallions may be glued in and therefore require some other action.  I will give it a try.  Hope one and all have a great Thanksgiving Day.  Ward

I have a "cotter pin puller" from Craftsman--works perfect for popping out stuck medallions.  There is a thread somewhere--I'll see if I can find it.

Thanks one and all for the excellent information.  The cotter pin puller looks like the best way to go, but since I did not have one available, I managed to get the job done with the allen wrench after a couple of tries and a few ugly words.  This site is first class!  Ward
